tea cup

This morning, I'm sitting in a very poignant moment- on my big blue couch, in my cold, tiled living room, sipping my favorite South African tea from the most beautiful tea cup I've ever seen (given to me by my friend Joanie for my birthday this year).
Yesterday in church, we were told a modern-day parable that meant so much to where I am right now:
__________

The Most Beautiful Tea Cup

An American couple went to England to celebrate their 25th
wedding anniversary. Both were fanciers of antiques, and of fine pottery and china. They stopped
in at a china shop in Sussex and were immediately struck by a single, little teacup.

The man asked to see the teacup, and he said, "I've never seen a more beautiful teacup. It's
gorgeous." And then the teacup spoke: "You don't understand. I haven't always been a teacup.
I began as a lump of ordinary red clay. But then my master picked me up and rolled me and patted
me again and again and again. And I screamed at him, 'Put me down and leave me alone.' But
he only smiled and said, 'Not yet. '"

Then the teacup described the entire process of being transformed from a lump of common clay
into the exquisite teacup which the man was holding. It told of how it was spun on a wheel until
it was sickeningly dizzy.

How it was placed into an oven where it knew it would be burned beyond recognition.

How, after being allowed to cool, it was painted all over, and how it thought the fumes from the
paint would suffocate it.

How it was placed into a second oven twice as hot as the first, and how it knew for certain it
would perish from the heat.

How at every step in the process, it begged to be left alone, but it could see the potter smiling and
gently saying, "Not yet!"

How, when it had given up all hope, the potter removed it from the fire and placed in on a shelf to
cool.

And how the potter handed it a mirror and told it to look at itself. The teacup said it exclaimed,
"No! This is impossible. I'm no longer an ordinary lump of clay. I'm beautiful!"

It told how the potter spoke and explained the process: "I know it hurt you to be rolled and
patted and molded into a perfectly shaped lump of clay. But if I had left you where you were, you
would have dried up into something useless."

"I know you were dizzied by the wheel, but if I had stopped, you would still have dried into
something unusable."

"I know the first oven nearly suffocated you, but if I hadn't put you there, you would have
cracked and crumbled with the first use."

"I know the paint was stifling and noxious, but it is the paint that gives you your character and
beauty."

"And I know the second oven was particularly painful and frightening, but if I hadn't put you
there, your hardness would not have held and you would have broken after a few uses."

"Now you are a finished product. You are what I had in mind when I first started with you."

I love South Africa, I love Living Hope, I love Capricorn Community Church, but like ANYWHERE on this fallen-earth, there are discouragements, there are trials, there are hard, hard days. I'm taking time out today to evaluate and pray through my next adventures in ministry here in South Africa. I feel like my hands are in a hundred things, but I'm not really the most effective I could be. This may be Satan's attacks, but it also is a great place of humility and is giving me time to really ask the Lord where I need to be serving and spending my time here at Living Hope and Capricorn Community Church.
As I sip tea from my most beautiful tea cup, given to me by my sweet friend from the USA, I'm clearly reminded that I have a purpose here, but I'm not that shiny tea cup yet- I'm being molded and heated and painted. This mission I'm on in South Africa seems to be a lot about molding ME. As much as I don't want this journey to be about me - I want it to be about fruit for the Kingdom - I know God has brought me to this 'island' and solitude to shape me into who He needs me to be.
Although tough and painful, I'm eager to be that tea cup!

Long lost friend

Today I had such a sweet time with a long lost friend, Preston. Preston & I once worked together in ministry & have been connected by the heart ever since- you know that kind of friend that you see only rarely but that you pick up & are honest with like time never passed. Preston came to Living Hope Teens Club in Capricorn with me today. I walked him around that wonderful place, introduced him to my friends and kids/teens that I work with and had him jump in & play music with our teens! It was a beautiful sight & sound!
After Club, we went to the beach & just chatted about life & Christ & caught up! It was a precious few hours for me. I love Preston's search for Truth, himself & significance. He always makes me think. I loved sharing a piece of my life here with him but I'm even more grateful for old friends & constant encouragement from the Lord right when I need it!
Thanks Preston! Praise the Lord!

Golden Dish

My friends Natalie and Eric took me on an adventure to one of the top off-the-tourist-path places: Golden Dish. One of the most traditional 'Coloured foods' is Curry... this is normally in the form of a meat dish (in a spicy curry sauce) and rice, but I was privileged to try a new Coloured dish: the Salome! It's a wrap (sort of like a mix between a tortilla and a pita) filled with all sorts of curry or steak, hot chips (fries), salad (lettuce) and a sauce. And let me set the stage with what this 'restaurant' looks like. It's like a scene from Seinfeld and the Soup Nazi. There's a line of people out the door, you walk up to the counter in a tight line, give your order, shuffle to the side, pay and then wait outside until your number is called. Swarms of people (of all kinds- all ethnicities) are waiting outside for their beautiful meals that come wrapped in butcher paper. Then, Eric told me it wouldn't be a complete Golden-Dish-Coloured-experience without a Cabana (a milk-based drink, flavored with artificial pineapple juice) drunk only out of a straw. We took our meals to the car, because like the Soup Nazi's place, there's no place to sit down. This is like the drive-in of restaurants; everyone sits in the parking-lot with their friends and enjoys good food and good company.
Then, after our outing, we went to Eric's mom's house where she fed us Chocolate Mouse Cake. My stomach couldn't take much more, but Natalie told me I must at least taste the cake and experience the joy of family wanting to continually feed guests here. So, I took a tiny piece and forced a bite or three down. It was a lovely cake, but after my Salome experience, I thought I was going to pop.

Here are some photos from my very-Coloured night:

Still loving Cape Town... especially the 'insider' tours that my friends take me on! This is stuff NOT on a tourist map.

Hip Hop Bible Study?

Because of some of the ministry that the Shades Mountain Ladies Team did just a few weeks ago, my eyes were opened to the need for a deeper, more challenging Bible Study for our core ladies of Capricorn Church. I saw that the current Women's Ministry Leader (Gail) was burned out and had her plate totally full. So, after talking with Gail and our pastor and pastor's wife, I'm now leading our ladies in Bible Study on Tuesday nights (2 weeks of the month) and the other two weeks, Gail will lead a 'social night' or prayer time for the ladies.
Last week we began our study! We're doing 'He Speaks to Me' by Priscilla Shirer. It's a video-based study (like Beth Moore) with lots of homework. Our ladies were already challenged by the first video and discussion we had! I think this is going to bring great growth in the Lord which I hope translates to their children growing and families becoming closer to the Lord!
Tonight was Gail's night to lead... however, she decided we'd do something different. She asked me to lead ... AEROBICS. Yes, aerobics. She brought Hip Hop Abs! We told the ladies to wear comfortable clothes and come ready to move! The night was hilarious. I stood in front- mostly to keep from being distracted by my own laughter from the situation. We all laughed and laughed as we looked around the room at each other. I loved what a 'bonding' experience and memory this was!

Please keep my precious Capricorn Ladies in prayer. Not only because they may be sore tomorrow (ha!) but because they are the foundation of our church. They are already a blessing to me!

First Funeral in South Africa

On a recent blog post, I asked you to pray for my friends who just lost their 10 day-old baby. I was fortunate enough to attend the funeral and support this family. Many of our Living Hope friends were there as well. It was a giant 'body of Christ' support group during this tragic, emotional time. We were holding each other up as we cried and mourned the loss of life.
The tiny, white baby casket was heart-breaking. The mom (a friend of mine and one of the first people I ever met in SA) was wailing tears- the kind that come from your gut and are painful to hear- as if the tears are crying out to the Lord from the soul.
Please continue to keep them in prayer. They need the strength and comfort of our Lord.

Margate recap in photos

Because it's been awhile since I've been able to blog, I thought I'd start with some photos. A picture is worth much more than words, so this should give you a good taste of the variety of ministry that took place in that wonderful 2 weeks.

And the story begins....

Merchison Reading Room (very similar to Living Hope Afternoon Clubs)

This little one, Grace, became a big part of why I loved Merchison (a Zulu town, very similar economically to my home of Capricorn). Grace came to Reading Room everyday with a smile on her face ready to play! She lives across the street from the Reading Room facility and we were invited to her home (for an intentional home-visit) one afternoon; it was there that Grace told her mom all about what she learns in Reading Room and we had an opportunity to pray with her mom. Grace now has an open door to tell her mom what she's learning about Jesus! This visit was just the beginning of Reading Room touching the lives of the community they're working in!

Girls Cell Group (Norwegian Settlers Church). We were able to be with this group 2 weeks in a row; one of the weeks the leader was out of town, so we were able to lead study/discussion!

Zulu village- no electricity, no running water, a pond in the middle of this town supplies water to families, farms and cattle. The organization we went to serve, Genesis (http://www.genesishope.co.za/ministries), runs a Skills Development Group 2 days a week- giving women an opportunity to meet together, hear God's Word and learn a skill (sewing, painting, beading, etc).

This was a little one I got to hold and rock while her mom was in the Skills Development class. I had a sweet time loving on my Zulu baby!

Meagan and I got to visit a few children/youth groups. One was in a Zulu village, one was in a mainly white area of town (Margate) and the other was a mixture of the two. The photo above was taken with our Zulu friends that attended the 'mixed' youth group one Friday. We had a Luau!

A taste of Zulu Culture at the uShaka Marine World! One Saturday we were in Durban, we traveled to their Sea World. It was quite the day...

Meagan and I went to the Dolphin and Seal Shows, walked through the large Aquarium, saw sharks, fish and turtles!

On our last two days, we stayed in a hotel in Durban- to get away and relax before we headed home to deep, hard ministry in Cape Town. Meagan and I took this time to talk, debrief a bit and see some of the country we hadn't seen. We ended up driving all over creation - chasing the recommended things to do and sights to see. It was a great journey! Our favorite adventure on those two days was HORSEBACK RIDING! It was Meagan's first time on a horse. We had a private tour-guide and enjoyed our time trotting through the mountains of Durban!

More stories of this memorable adventure to come...

Urgent prayer request for my sweet friends

I know I have lots to catch my blog-friends up on. Life has been hectic & I haven't slowed down in 3 weeks. Updating the blog is my top priority this weekend. Good stories & pictures to come.

I write today because I need your urgent prayers for one of my dear friends in Capricorn:

A* & M* (friends from Living Hope) just had their baby girl 10 days ago. They've had lots of ups & downs with this pregnancy. I got a message from Avril today saying the baby unexpectedly went into a comma & died suddenly. I don't have any more details right now but I know my friends are crushed, confused & hurting. Please lift them up as we all grieve this loss of life in our Living Hope Capricorn family.
Thank you for your prayers.
