Solving Poverty

I don't like thinking of my Capricorn People as poverty-stricken. There's some sort of stigma that comes with that & when I think of 'those in poverty,' my heart gets saddened & pity fills me. My people of Capricorn are in poverty when compared to most of the world - especially America. But my people of Capricorn are not fully hopeless - there are many who are turning their lives & hearts to the Lord! This is a slow process when your physical surroundings, a growling stomach & sickness surround you BUT God is big & powerful & is calling the hearts of His children to Himself!

Someone (a Coloured, Christian South African) once told me that the average household in the Coloured Community in South Africa earns R1800 per month (about $257 US). Many of the youth I know in America have that much money per month & they spend it on __________? I guarantee its not spent on rent or food or health-care for their family. I'm guessing its spent on luxuries & entertainment. I can only imagine what that money could do in aiding the spread of the Gospel in Africa, in feeding the hungry, in taking care of orphans, in providing clean water. The list could go on & on.
My passion for this topic is hot because I'm faced with hungry children & struggling families everyday here in South Africa. The article below affirmed my 'soap-box' & encouraged me in the efforts we're making on the ground at Living Hope!

--------
Can We Really Solve Poverty?
By Richard Stearns, President of World Vision

"Our world is increasingly divided between rich and poor. When I was born, the richest countries were 35 times as wealthy as the poorest. Half a century later, it stood at 75 to 1. The divide more than doubled on the watch of my generation—the one that vowed to end war and save the planet.

Today, 2.6 billion people—40 percent of the world's population—live on less than $2 a day. Americans, who make up less than 5 percent of the world's population, live on an average $105 a day. That means the typical American has more material wealth than 96 percent of the world's people. Even a student earning $105 a week is wealthier than 85 percent of the world.

But it's more than money. Poverty is about lack of essentials such as food, clean water, and basic health care. Poverty is about lack of hope for the future, because your children can't get an education—if they survive their first five years of life. Poverty is about not being able to find meaningful work. Poverty is about lack of dignity.

This is not how God intended the world to be. The apostle Paul spoke to the issue of disparity in 2 Corinthians, when he urged the wealthier Corinthian church to make a relief offering to the Christians in Jerusalem, who were in dire economic circumstances. "Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed," he wrote, "but that there might be equality. At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, as it is written: 'The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little'" (8:13-15, TNIV).

The Bible is clear that God's people always had a responsibility to see that everyone in their society was cared for at a basic-needs level. Ruth was able to glean wheat from Boaz's field because God had instructed those who controlled the land to not harvest everything, so that there would be food for the poor.

For Christians, this is a justice issue or, stated more bluntly, a moral issue in which those of us who have plenty seem willing to allow others to have nothing. It is not our fault that people are poor, but it is our responsibility to do something about it.

But how?

People and churches that believe tackling poverty is easy probably have never tried it. Poverty, disease, ethnic hatred and injustice are the oldest plagues on the human race and when we tackle them, we must not underestimate the challenge. The truth is that the poor know much more about their own problems than we do.

We think we know their problems and have the answers even before we speak with them face to face. Walking with the poor requires a willingness to learn from them before attempting to help them. Tackling issues of health education or economic deprivation cross culturally is rocket science, and anyone who attempts it without appreciating its complexity will regret it."

Stearns goes on to tell of job-education & micro-loan theories. We, at Living Hope, continue to find this education the most effective way to help those who really want help! We must evaluate our standards of living and selflessly give to fulfill God's commands - to effectively serve others and live in love toward our fellow creation of God. To read the entire article:

Thanksgiving Service at Capricorn Church

12 Dec 2010

Capricorn Church Thanksgiving Service: a time for the church to reflect and celebrate what God has done in the year. We had a wonderful worship service - each ministry (youth, children's Sunday School, Ladies' Ministry, etc) was given an opportunity to share a testimony or do an 'act' in the service. It was really great hearing the testimonies of those dedicated to the church - telling of how faithful God is and all that He's provided through His church! It was such a wonderful reminder that all the effort put into ministry in the Capricorn Church has not been in vain. The smallest acts can mean the world to someone, so we must continue to be faithful and let God reap the harvest in His time!

One of our youth - giving her testimony about a hard past, hearing the Gospel this year and asking the Lord into her life! She tearfully shared and emotionally moved the whole church!

My Ladies singing Afrikaans praise songs!

Lunch served to the whole church after service! These are some of our youth girls enjoying their lunch outside in the wonderful South African summer sun!

Ladies Ministry Celebration - ending the year well!

Our Ladies Ministry had its last meeting of 2010 and went out with a great celebration! The leadership began the night telling our ladies how much we've loved serving them this past year and loved seeing them grow! We asked them to each give us a prayer request (this is the time we really 'get into' the lives of these ladies and hear what's on their hearts). As we went around the circle, one precious lady (Katie) that has been faithfully coming to Sunday Worship (and infrequently to our Ladies' Bible Study) gave her prayer request and then said, "... and I'd love to give my heart to the Lord tonight." We stopped, a little taken off-guard, and then most of us starting crying, hugging and celebrated her decision! After we prayed for her, I asked, "What made you make this decision tonight?" She then told us her story of visiting churches in the area, coming to Capricorn Church and not wanting to come back because it was so cold in our little, tin, building. She mentally said that she couldn't worship in such a cold room. But, for some reason, the very next Sunday she was back. She brought her son, he got involved in Sunday School and she began seeing the warm hearts of the people. She said, "I say that this church loved our community and the people were real." She then told of how she'd heard all about Christ and His salvation but wasn't sure about following Him. She then decided she couldn't do life without a relationship with Christ and knew she needed to surrender and give Him her life! It was so neat sitting hearing that story and being so confident that this was a pure, innocent, real decision and commitment!
We were all on a spiritual high after that! As we continued with the night, we read the scripture about Jesus washing the feet of his disciples and giving them instructions to serve others as He was serving them. We washed the feet of the Ladies and had a wonderful time of 'fellowship.' It was so neat to serve Katie, our new Believer, and celebrate her decision by allowing the Ladies' Leadership to wash her feet.
One of the ladies that I served told me no one had ever washed her feet. She was a bit timid to let me serve her in that way, but after she relaxed, she enjoyed the process. It was humbling and an honor to be the first person to wash her feet and show her the love of Christ in that way - a true picture of remembering Christ's commands.
What an amazing way to end the year! All praise to the Lord for showing us fruit of our time with these wonderful women!

Katie, our new Believer!

Holiday Club Recap

Our Life Skills Educators hard at work - planning, testing/making samples of crafts, getting ready (the week before Holiday Club)!

Capricorn Kids Holiday Club: around 70 children per day!

Capricorn Teens Holiday Club: around 20 per day!

Natalie - my Capricorn team leader - was so pleased at how Holiday Club turned out. Yes, we were greatly short-handed, but God provided all we needed! The gospel was shared multiple days and children and teens were given the love of Christ! It was an amazing way to end the year 2010 in Living Hope Ministry!

I love this kid!

This is one of my favorite parts of Sunday Worship - when my sweet little Evanthea comes and snuggles on my lap! This is the same little girl that calls me 'Mo' & runs up to me each time she sees me in the streets of Capricorn. Sometimes I'll even drop in for a visit at her house just to see her, get a hug, & talk to her mom. She warms my heart!

December Holiday Club

Today was the first day of Holiday Club (similar to an American VBS). As many of you know, Living Hope tries to provide Biblical, educational, fun alternatives to out-of-school temptations & time-wasting that can so easily attract our children & teens.
Today we had about 70 kids in our morning program & 13 teens in the afternoon! Numbers are usually lowest the first day, so we're excited to see how many continue to come & hear about God's love!

Pray for us this week, as we're short-handed: just 2 'full-time' Living Hope adults (with 4 teens helping in the morning program). I get overwhelmed thinking about just 2 of us alone in this task, but God provided greatly today - enough teen helpers to lend a hand & the children were fairly obedient!

My favorite part of the day was Worship - Natalie (my team leader) taught our kids a new song: God of This City by Chris Tomlin. I've always loved this song but hearing these children & teens sing this song about Capricorn was so moving. Natalie explained the words & the meaning & you could quickly tell that the lyrics were reaching the hearts of these kids! Capricorn is full of those that we sung about - those in darkness, hopeless, restless. I pray God will transform Capricorn because of the prayers of His people!

-----------

God of This City
By Chris Tomlin

[Verse 1]
You're the God of this City
You're the King of these people
You're the Lord of this nation
You are

[Verse 2]
You're the Light in this darkness
You're the Hope to the hopeless
You're the Peace to the restless
You are

There is no one like our God
There is no one like our God

[Chorus]
For greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City
Greater thing have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City

Unique Small Group Room

I laugh when I think about the amazing church campus I left in the States. After many, many years of cramped space & inadequate facilities, our church went through an amazing building campaign & the youth benefited greatly from the church's giving!
Now, after hearing God's call, my life & church look a lot different... When you worship at a church-plant, you often share space. We only have one large gathering room; it has many functions during the week: Sunday School space, Sunday Worship Sanctuary, Music lesson studio, Worship Practice space, Youth Room, Ladies Ministry, Prayer Room... Sometimes (most of the time) the space is being used when I need to have a separate meeting. My weekly Girls Small Group most always gets bumped out of this one-room-space. I find it humorous that my meeting room ends up being MY CAR. I turn sideways in the drivers seat & the girls pile in the back & passenger seat. We open our Bibles to study, pray, share struggles, and sometimes even share a snack together in that cramped little car! God is using that vehicle to build discipleship relationships & grow strong girls!
Oh the challenges of planting a church but oh the joys of simplicity.

Ladies Ministry Growing

God placed the challenge upon my heart to have 40 women in Bible Study on Tuesday nights (by mid 2011). I shared that challenge with our 8 regular attendees a few weeks ago. As we gathered to meet last week, they all brought friends & family members! We had Ladies Bible Study with 15 Capricorn Ladies + me!
Please pray for this group. The Moms of Capricorn are the foundation of their broken homes. These are predominantly single moms desperate for and dependent on God's help! What a great place of surrender!

Praising God for answered prayer & for these women!

A new kind of Christmas

Its the most wonderful (hectic) time of year... Christmas. This Festive Season looks a lot different in my part of the world. Not only am I in the heat of summer this December with no fir tree or lights or hot cider in my home, but I'm also not concerned with the normal 'thoughts' of the season in America. The last few years at this time, I was going to Christmas plays & pageants - and hopping parties - in an effort to spend time with & celebrate with all areas of relationships in my life. It seemed as if every group (Sunday School, staff, small group, ladies group, your accountability partner ...) expected to gather to eat & hang out - often exchanging some token of appreciation. Whew, I look back now & it exhausts me to think of the 2 weeks before Christmas - the time spent running around 'partying,' the money spent on 'bringing a dish' & the gift exchanges... And that was just BEFORE Christmas- that doesn't even include the day-of prep & gifts & family-time spent. Although all of that 'togetherness' is my cultural definition of Christmas, I'm totally out of that tradition this year & now making new memories & traditions. This new-way of doing Christmas is much less stressful and expensive - and it seems much more pure to the meaning of this Season!

Capricorn Church, thanks to the help of my Shades Mountain friends, put together an Christmas Advent devotion series for our congregation to go through at home. Our church is being reminded of the relevance, prophecy, & importance of God's Word! My tiny little church has never done anything like this. The unity its bringing is beautiful & our hearts are being knit together by common learning experiences! This is Christmas season ill never forget!

Read an article by one of my favorite authors, Rob Bell, (about Advent) that I want to pass along:

May you be reminded of the purity of this season! Take a deep breath & enjoy Christ!

World AIDS Day 2010

(picture: Walk-in Clinic & the Life Skills Team)

Living Hope was ALL OVER THE PLACE today! As you can imagine we, as an HIV Prevention Organization, had a lot of people's attention. Our Life Skills Educators Team split up and helped at 6 locations in the local community. Health Counselors and HIV Testing Organizations set up mobile testing sites all over the Cape, so we brought our lively group and a little creativity to engage the crowds and educate them about the infection and spread of HIV - emphasizing 'You win or lose by the way you choose, so choose right!' This was the title and theme of our games that we played - doing HIV trivia and letting the audience participate in interactive games!

The group I was with ministered to the West Lake Community - passing out flyers door-to-door - advertising the free testing at the local community center. We then moved to a local hospital (with HIV/AIDS & TB patients) - helping them celebrate life and encouraging them. Our third and final location was at a Walk-In Clinic where there were rows and rows of young moms with their babies - waiting to see a nurse. We set up shop in the middle of the waiting room and did our educational program there!

The day concluded when all the Living Hope Life Skills Educators supported a Netball Tournament in Masi (a black community Living Hope is active in). The tournament was part of Masi's World AIDS Day awareness. It drew a crowd and caused the community to unite! Netball is similar but very different to my native-sport, basketball. I had a blast playing and being wild on the court! It was nice having all the Life Skill Educators together - either playing or cheering! I love these people!
