Eric's good-bye

My friend and Marketing Representative of Living Hope is leaving us for an amazing job opportunity in another part of Cape Town. Eric & I bonded immediately when I came to Living Hope & we worked together so well! I'm going to miss him greatly, and I pray he continues to hear God's voice & walks in His ways!

Farewell Eric! God bless you! You've been a blessing!

Back to the real world

After 3 FULL weeks of Holiday Club (everyday, all day with the kids/teens), this week I caught up on my paperwork, tried to whittle my emails down, wrote/gathered curriculum for the next 6 months of Afternoon Clubs & made some head-way in the next phase of our Community Leader Development ministry! It was a lot of time at a desk, but it was a nice change.

Meagan & I also got to meet with all our Youth Cell Groups & talked with them about how to fundraise for our up-coming Youth Camp (9-11 Sept 2011)! We have to raise a LOT of money & we want our youth to be the ones behind that; so we all gathered, brainstormed, divided responsibilities & are underway in planning! This whole process was HUGE for us; the concept of working for things is foreign to our youth because so many organizations come & give handouts. The attitude of 'I deserve what you're giving' must stop. Selflessness has ceased because of the poverty of the mind. Our Camp planning is another great step in teaching our youth (and community) how to plan, budget, and work for what they need and want! This is a challenge & a PROCESS.

My Capricorn Children

These are children I have fallen in love with. I pick them up for Sunday School each week and have the privilege of learning from their sweet perspectives on life and the Church.

Matthew 19:14
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

1 Samuel 1:27-28
I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD.

My Cape Town

Meagan is officially coming to America!
We went to the US Embassy here in Cape Town this morning - Meagan had her official US Embassy interview. She passed with flying colors! It was a long process but the paperwork has the US seal of approval; we're picking up her Passport and Visa on Friday.

Leaving CPT: 5 Oct 2011
Landing in Birmingham, AL: 6 Oct 2011

Survived!

3 weeks (aka: 15 day or 120 hours ... 7200 exhausting, heart-renching minutes) of Holiday Club community ministry is over! I didn't think I'd physically, mentally, emotionally make it. It was HARD, out-of-comfort-zone work. Children & teens were unpredictable and challenging to minister to, but oh the rewards of knowing God was and is working in those lives to show His ultimate purpose - Salvation from a sinful world and reconciliation to a perfect God!

As I drove to work on this day, God showed me the most beautiful sunrise - over the mountains & ocean - declaring His greatness & how BIG He truly is. What a blessing to know the Creator of all the sunrises! A sweet, poignant reminder to press on!

Week 2 Holiday Club Recap IN PHOTOS!

Week 2 of Holiday Club ... felt like I barely made it through. It was a rough week - lots of children, lots of challenges, but lots of progress!

Here's a Week 2 recap in photos:

KIDS CLUB

"Call Out" - I drive, the rest of the team (and a few lucky children) get to bang the drums and make noise - yelling in the community so the children wake up and come to Living Hope!

Natalie leading a small group

Jonah fish craft

Precious hugs each morning!

Melanie with the Preschoolers - recaping the lesson by watching Veggie Tales

My mischievous friend

I love African children!

TEEN CLUB

Meagan on the mic - MC of soccer/netball tournaments

Tournament day!

Curious spectators - some of our Kids Club attendees like to watch the teens play

Teens helping Meagan act out the Jonah story

The day we let the teens take over ... they were in charge of planning the story, small groups (seen above typing the discussion questions), games, and music/worship! I LOVED this day - watching the teens practice leadership and seeing some natural skills come out! We're making some progress!

First-ever Living Hope Career Day

1 July 2011
What do you want to be when you grow up? ... this question is hardly talked about among those we work with. We daily see the inability to dream. Ever since we began Afternoon Teen Clubs, we've wanted to expand the career dreams of our teens - allow them to research, think wider than what they see in their communities and educate themselves as to how to attain the goal of their career dreams. Out of this desire, Living Hope Teens LSEs birthed the idea to have a Living Hope Career Day.

On 1 July 2011 we transported around 110 teens to our main campus where 25 Professionals set up booths and talked to our teens about their careers. Musicians, Soccer Coaches, Hotel Managers, Librarians, Nurses, Journalists, Chefs, Entrepreneurs, Firemen, Wedding Planners, Photographers, Security Guards ... just to name a few.

One of our LSEs pointed out a young boy to me - telling me he's one that stands at the traffic-lights begging for money after school and on the weekends. I was so encouraged that he attended our event and has the opportunity to dream bigger than 'begging' the rest of his life.

We've had great feedback from the Professionals involved and our teens! I think this was a great beginning to a deeper teen ministry!

Kids gather inside for welcome, memory verse and Bible story time.

My new little friend, Anati.
Holiday Club takes me WAY out of my comfort zone. This particular week I was leading the Preschool group (ages 3-6). I'm not naturally gifted with children, but God has allowed me to fall in love with the children of Capricorn. I love seeing them everyday during school holidays.

Kids Netball Drills

Teens Netball Practice

Curious little boys - wanting to watch the teens play soccer and netball

Teens gather inside for games and lesson. HUGE numbers this week in teens. So fun to see them inviting friends and enjoying Teen Club!

Week 2 of Holiday Club Over

Whew! Barely made it through this one. One day we had 126 Kids & 25 Teens... With only 7 adults helping lead. God continues to provide & be strong in our weakness. Praise God for His strength... Need more & more each day!

Pray for our final week of Holiday Club. Ill try to post more photos of these crazy weeks very soon!

God bless you for you faithfulness in lifting up the people of South Africa!
