Fruit Salad Congregation

On Sunday at our little church-plant, our guest preacher (a missionary from the UK that is a member of our church) likened our church to Fruit Salad. The melting pot of nations that our church has become is beautiful, but we're starting to see how difficult it is to merge culture, traditions, religious views and leadership styles. As I've said before, our church is made up of people from The Congo, Malawi, UK, USA, Zimbabwe, multiple South African cultures and languages... and more.

This Saturday - our church is having our annual Leadership Meeting. Ministries haven't officially begun yet. Cell Groups, Youth Fridays, Ladies Ministry, etc - all wait until this Leadership Meeting before starting a new year. Pastor Severo will cast his vision for the year and he's asked me to lead a session on Discipleship. We've invited around 30 people to this meeting. Last year we had about 4 people faithfully serving on leadership. This year, we're hoping to have trustworthy people alongside us to carry the weight of this enormous task. It's not like we haven't tried to build leaders and delegate in the past - we've never had faithful, follow-through people beside us. Trying to strip poverty-mentality and poverty-spirituality is difficult!

So, I'm asking you to commit this meeting to prayer and pray continually for the leadership of our church-plant. I'll keep you posted!

Dear Prayer Partners,

This month has been exactly what I've needed. Living Hope ended work mid-December and the church closed 'regular' ministry as well. I've rested and read and recouped for 2 full weeks. I'm back at work now, but with a new perspective and much needed reflection.

Here are some highlights from December:

. Finished a week of Holiday Club with the children and teens of Capricorn - the equivalent to VBS in difficult conditions.

. Got to spend time with some children of Capricorn Community Church as I took them shopping for gifts for their parents.

. Christmas: in the heat of summer, very un-commercialized Christmas season, Church on Christmas morning - Meagan preached! Enjoyed meals with a few South African families who invited me over.

. REST! Days where I didn't set an alarm clock or have an agenda. Lots of time at the beach... and yes, I'm a little pink even with multiple applications of sun-screen.

. Time to pray and reflect and commit 2012 to the Lord! This year is going to continue with challenges and things to overcome, but we have a God who has already overcome!

As I sought the Lord and dug into His Word over the break, I realized that I want to model Christ even more this year. This means getting my will and my mind in line with how Jesus modeled. Jesus' life was described in Luke 2:52 as this:"Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man." I want to do likewise. This verse is my mantra this year!

1. I want God's wisdom. I don't know how to live here without Him.

2. I'm continuing my goal in stature - to run (not walk) a 5K this year (I got side-tracked by health issues last year). I want to grow in health!

3. And I need the favor of God and man here in South Africa!

So pray with me as I ask for wisdom, health and favor. Thank you for your support and for keeping up with this journey. I really do feel and see answers to your prayers!

honesty isn't embarrassing if used appropriately

After writing an honest email to a friend, I got a response from her that reminded me that living life as an 'open book' can encourage much more than the possibility of personal embarrassment. Often we put our 'masks' on and hide our real inner-struggles and feelings of faith-failure because as Christians, we're supposed to be positive and following Christ - the one who never disappoints. Yet, when we're in trial and disappointment and true inner-struggle, we don't share and allow others to see what a deep, honest relationship with Christ looks like. Christians are not perfect. We're not even close to it. If you're really trying to follow Christ, you're actually more aware of how messed-up you are than those who are living apart from Christ. The humility that comes from really knowing who you are under the Grace of Christ brings light to why we really need Him.

So, in light of my honesty being encouraging to one, I decided I'd let you all in on what the last few weeks have taught me. I'm coming out of the pit and beginning to get some perspective ... but for those that are where I was, take courage! The only way God will get glory from your story is if you share it. Here are bits of the email and scripture I shared:

Oh that funny, confusing provision from the Lord.

Exodus 16.

I'm learning that the people called it, 'What is this?' Each day I'm saying to God, "What is this? Is this your will? Is this really your provision? Is this your idea of good?"

The people could only gather enough for a day.

God wants me to gather only enough strength for the day. He wants me to wake up each day and see what He's provided - NOT TRYING TO GATHER MORE THAN I NEED. Our personal provisions and ideas of what we need are not His. When we try to do it on our own, worms and disaster and nastiness comes. Our sin and selfishness are revealed.

6 weeks ago as I was deep in a pit, I was reminded that I have to want to be healed and have to want my sight restored.

Mark 10:46 and following ....

The man didn't have sight.

I've lost my Jesus-vision.

The man heard Jesus.

I'm hearing him but I can't see his work around me.

The people were pushing the man aside.

I feel like I've been brushed aside by those around me and no one cares.

Jesus stopped.

I'm asking Jesus to stop and listen to me. Heal me.

The people payed attention to the man once his cry was heard by Jesus.

I want people to encourage me to continue to seek Jesus and everyone be pointed toward His goals.

Jesus rhetorically asked the blind man what he wanted. Jesus knew. Jesus wanted to hear it from His mouth.

The blind man spoke. He wanted to be healed.

Jesus fully healed him.

I want to be restored - I want my optimistic Jesus-lenses again. I want to see God active. I want to continue to follow, but I need Jesus to stop moving ahead and truly heal me from my woundedness.

But, I must call out to him. I must want to be healed. I must not give up. I must have faith. My faith must heal me.

Legacy Thank You!

In 2011, Living Hope rolled out an internship program (called Legacy) for the Life Skills department. We understand that many young people want to go into ministry but furthering education around here is hard – finances and opportunities are not as vast as I’m used to. The Legacy Program allowed local pastors to nominate and write a recommendation for one of their members to come study under Living Hope for a year. The applicant must have graduated high school and be in good standing with their church. They were given a stipen for food and travel but this was not seen as an income-job, this was a gap-year type opportunity. The Legacy Interns for 2011 were able to see ministry first-hand, they were part of a community-team, they were trained in many skills (Worker Readiness and Ethics, Gospel Presentation, Computer Skills, etc). They were also educated each Friday during our training sessions together – going through the Rosebank Bible Course which is a survey of the Bible.

These interns were thrown into ministry and swam with us all. The two specific interns that I worked with became like Living Hope Capricorn family. They were treated as staff, they were given responsibilities as staff, and were trusted friends! They taught me a lot about myself and the reason relational ministry is so important here. We ministered to each other!

At the December Holiday Club, Avril allowed our staff to go to McDonalds for lunch and celebrate the year with our interns. I made a recap video of our interns’ year and highlighted all the many ways they helped us, and also the ways they were stretched. We’re sad to see them leave Living Hope, but they’re on to bigger things now. I’m thankful for the season God allowed us to learn from each other and I’ll never forget those lessons.

Living Hope Staff Christmas Party

Living Hope’s Trustees held a Living Hope wide Christmas Party. All 170 + staff, volunteers and their families were invited to a lawn party-braai (a big BBQ). We sat for hours and chatted and met family members of our colleagues.

After lunch, we gathered in the big chapel (barely fitting us all) and were thanked by our managers and the Living Hope board members. It was quite an event.

South African Family

My South African family had a wonderful occasion to celebrate this year. Our grandmother turned 90 years old! She’s been through a lot this year, but her faith continues to sustain her.

After taking this photo, I told my South African sister, Meagan, that she is a younger reflection of her grandmother; Ma and Meagan have a sweet connection and special relationship … and share so many of the same physical features. Happy 90^th birthday Ma! I’m thankful to have a South African family, and I’m honored to watch you serve the Lord with your every word! May God grant you peace and joy the rest of your life!

Youth Year End Celebration

The Capricorn Community Church Youth Committee (fore mentioned in recent posts) met and planned a Year End Youth Celebration. The idea was that we look back at 2011 and praise God for what He’s done. This idea was both exciting and hard – as we’ve all been through a lot together. I’ve always said I’m not here to be their friends, so when they’re not walking in a manner worthy of God’s calling, I let them know. There have been more than one Friday Youth where I cry and cry because I’m disappointed in these youth, BUT there have been many Fridays and weeks where I’ve seen baby-steps and slight progress in their Christian walk. So, we wanted to give God glory for His work and His pruning through this year.

The Youth Committee was given total freedom to plan – giving them ownership of things always makes the events and goals succeed because they fight and work for what they want and what they want to succeed. I sat back and took notes. The conclusion: they wanted to have awards presented (certificates with superlatives), they wanted to dress up in costumes (categories were given: best pair, most creative, recycled style, celebrity, etc), food was to be involved (no surprise), dance competitions on the agenda, and they even wanted to invited THEIR PARENTS! I laughed and laughed thinking about all the aspects of the night and the fact that if Meagan and I had come up with these requirements – specifically dress in costume and invite your parents – they would have balked at the idea and not shown up. But, with plans in place, everyone left the meeting with tasks and responsibilities. Everyone pulled their weight and the night was a HIT!

There were two emcees, dance competitions amongst the parents, light snacks, costumes and I made a video to recap almost every big and small event from 2011. Even our visiting teams made an appearance in the video and shouts of excitement came over the crowd when they saw my American friends! There were also some very sweet testimonies from our youth about certain aspects of Youth this year that touched them and allowed them to grow. I was very impressed with the outcome of the night … and year. God’s plans are unfolding –slowly – and we’re waiting patiently for 2012 to see what else He will do in and through the Youth of Capricorn Community Church.

Capricorn Community Church Carols

Our church held a community carols service outside our church building. We got lots of attention from the passers-by and many stopped in and joined us. We sang and danced and were reminded of the great need for revival in our Capricorn community. Praying God will use Capricorn Community Church to transform the misconceptions about Christianity in a culture that knows no selflessness.

Living Hope December Holiday Clubs

Another Holiday Club has come and gone. December school holidays allow us to minister to our community children for longer hours each day.

Kids 9:00am – 12noon and Teens 2:00pm- 4:00pm.

Children are not my thing, but there’s something about these children that have captured my heart. These are long, hard days – full of running around, playing games, doing crafts, wiping snotty noses, taking a thousand potty breaks for the little ones, and teaching about the love of Christ while showing it with your whole life!

Such valuable time with the least of these (Matthew 25:45)!

Christmas Traditions too

As my personal Christmas tradition continues, I’ve adopted a family’s children and taken them Christmas shopping for their parents. I did this last year with the Pastor’s children (3) and this year I added 2 more little ones from Capricorn that have been near and dear to my heart this year. I picked them all up at 11am, we went straight to the beach for some fun and a picnic, home for showers and dinner and to the big mall downtown for shopping and watching the Christmas crowds, then again home for a movie and bed! I was exhausted and I think they were too. We woke up the next morning, had breakfast, finished the movie that they all fell asleep to the night before, made Christmas ornaments, wrapped their parents gifts that they’d purchased, played outside and went home around 12 noon the next day. I never knew 24 hours with 5 children could be so difficult yet so much fun.

Wedding Provided

Our first Capricorn Community Church Wedding went brilliantly! This sweet couple is from Malawi. Their family gave them their blessing, the traditional wedding price (lobola wedding tradition) was paid and they awaited the right time. Their families weren’t able to travel for this occasion, so they decided not wait for them, they asked the entire church to come to their wedding – as we’re their only family near them. Actually, Pastor Severo made their wedding our Sunday Morning Worship Service last Sunday! The couple was greeted by Praise and Worship music from our Worship Team, the congregation sang along. The dress borrowed, the decorations donated, the reception provided by our congregation! All free to our very appreciative bride and groom! After the ceremony, the couple went for pictures (a photographer from our church provided his services) and the congregation turned over the church for the reception. Flowers, food, chairs, tables … all a surprise to the bride and groom who had no part in planning or arranging the wedding. As Francis and Bertha walked into the reception hall, they were overjoyed. They were astonished to see all the food and church members that pitched in to make the celebration possible.

This truly was the picture of the church coming together, providing for each other, being family for each other and celebrating life’s journey with one another. This couple hadn’t the means for a wedding (hence the Sunday Morning Service) and the church came together and showed love for this couple far away from their home.

Our church is a melting-pot of culture. Capricorn is full of refugees (Rwanda, Malawi, Somalia, Zimbabe), a variety of South African cultures (Xhosa, Afrikaans), and multiple other cultures. In our church, we currently have missionaries from America, UK, Germany, Sweeden. Our church speaks English predominantly, but English is not the first language of a of most in our congregation – it’s just the common language of all present. This truly is “every nation tribe and tongue (Rev 7, 14).”

Update

Thank you to many who have emailed and responded to the need for prayer over what’s going on in South Africa. I’ve been greatly humbled to know how many of you are actually following the work going on here and are genuinely interested in me! Thank you!

Just to update you: December has gone well. We’ve done lots of deep ministry.

- The church is in a more stable place than it has been recently.

- Living Hope is on break – a much needed one for such a challenging year

- I’m still struggling with 2012 and what God wants me to be focusing on, but I’ve got some time before that has to be decided.

- My physical state and exhaustion is being rested with a 2 week Christmas break. I’ve had time to sit on the beach, read, sleep, and relax.

- Mentally, emotionally, spiritually – I’m doing better but I’m still challenged by the results of November and need some healing. God is teaching me a lot through the challenges of working with broken people and those affected by poverty-mindsets. Ministry will always be hard here, but I’m learning more and more that I’m nothing and God can only use those that are willing to be stripped and molded by Him. Pruning process continues.

- Capricorn – the military along with local police are still patrolling the area. I haven’t seen any big raids lately, but I’m not in the community on a daily basis right now as I am during the work-weeks. I’ve heard of some heavy military movements upon homes, but no backlash, which is a blessing.

Christmas Traditions in Cape Town

This being my second Christmas here, traditions are beginning. There’s a lovely Christmas production and Nativity Play at Kirstenbosch Gardens. With $8 US dollars, you can get a ticket, bring a picnic and enjoy a night of Carols with thousands of other festive attendees.

Upon entry, everyone is given a carol-flyer and a candle. When the sun sets, you can light your candle and have Carols by Candlelight. However, this year, they had Gardens workers walking around during the pre-show inviting all children to swap their wax candle for a “glow-stick.” Many did so and even the children in the play (on stage) walked around the production with glow sticks (that look nothing like candles but more like airport landing aids). I was wishing they had the battery operated candles like the American productions use now; there was something about the glow-sticks that didn’t ring true to the ancient attire the shepherds and angels adorned. But, safety first!

Youth Leadership 2012 Retreat

The year 2011 brought ups and downs in Capricorn Community Church that were unexpected, and God’s plans have prevailed despite our expectations. One of my goals in being in South Africa and specifically with church-planting is to raise up leaders that are confident, trustworthy and passionate disciples of Christ (Exodus 18:17- 23). So as 2011 began and the youth leader and leadership committee (made up of a variety of young-adults) fell apart due to many lifestyle changes, I found myself confused and with only one other standing member from 2010, Meagan. We met with Pastor Severo at nauseam and saw that God definitely wiped our slates clean and provided His team for the year. Due to our small crew and my goal for raising up leaders amongst our own church members out of Capricorn, we prayed and prayed about having a Youth Leadership Committee made up of the very youth that we were ministering to. We asked about 8 youth to pray about committing to this leadership position for the year; 6 returned to us and said they’d like to serve their peers and be an active part of leading the Youth.

This committee met regularly to plan for Youth events, they were called upon to help with administrative duties, they were the voices of our church youth, they were held at a higher standard, and for the most part, they succeeded! We began small, tested the waters with how much responsibility they could handle, and God has built His church with His very own commands (Matt 16:18).

With 2012 staring at us, we began the process of electing another Youth Committee. One night at Friday Youth, we allowed the youth group to nominate 2 people who they’d like to lead the Youth for 2012. There were a few additions and even subtractions from the nominations – and thus, we approached the nominated ones, asked them to pray about the responsibility, and with their acceptance, we began pouring into them and planning for 2012. This small group came to my house for the weekend. We had sessions on evaluation and leadership and planning. This group of young people are ready to be used by God and I’m praying they learn and grow as they lead.

Since my honest post about the recent trials and struggles going on here in Capricorn, I've received many affirming & encouraging emails. THANK YOU to all who are praying & have added to the confirmation that God is at work. I'm reminded of the trials and persecution that Paul went through and wrote about setting an example of perseverance for such a time as this.

Let me reassure you all- I'm safe. I'm not in any abnormal danger, but life here is hard. I can't wake up one day without asking the Lord for physical, emotional, mental, spiritual strength.

November 2011 Recap

This has been a difficult month. November 2011 is one I'll never forget.

Mentally, I'm down and losing faith in transformation.

Emotionally, I can't stop crying because at every turn there's another disappointment or trial, and it feels like I can't get a breath.

Physically, I'm tired and don't feel like strength is possible in life here.

Spiritually there's a battle going on that is hindering growth – both mine and others.

November has brought lots of conversations at Living Hope and at Capricorn Community Church about 2012 and what work needs to be done, what ministry needs to look like, and what changes need to be made. This has brought lots of thought and good discussion, but the practical is what everyone is arguing about right now. Many people here in South Africa have told me that they believe I'm here because I'm supposed to speak up and tell others what I'm seeing. I'm a natural analyzer and have fairly strong spiritual discernment; this is not an easy role in this culture. I'm fighting for what I believe is God's direction, lined up with scripture, and trying to stand firm in what I know He's called me here to do. This has brought conflict and many hard days. I've been persecuted, slandered, and even threatened. I've felt even more like an outsider and questioned like a stranger. I've been here almost 2 years now, but it feels as if I'm still unknown and unaccepted. From the recent talks and messages, this journey has only begun and it's going to take years of work for people to see God's purposes. This is long-term ministry.

Not only has this been a month of verbal, spiritual, and emotional trials for me, but Capricorn is going through some tough days too. Someone likened the scene as something from the Biblical Sodom and Gomorra. In the town right next to Capricorn and where a lot of our youth go to school, there have been a multitude of shootings and gang violence. There was a period of time when school officials were sending numerous letters home to parents informing them of students who have been killed and warning parents of the violence. The situation led students to stay away from school, losing precious days of education that were replaced by fear. The authorities have heightened security and the scene in Capricorn on any given day is like one in a war-zone. Around 200 men from the South African Army have been deployed to our area. Tanks and police cars roam the streets. Army-uniformed men walk around with guns. Raids have taken place and roads blocked. One day I was trying to leave Capricorn, I drove down one street, met a crowd of curious on-lookers, realized they were watching a police-raid of a drug-house, had to turn around, went down another street, met army gun-men who told me I couldn't pass … did this for about 15 minutes before I found a road that would lead me out. I'm thankful for the presence of such 'authority,' but I'm suspecting a revolt from the people to come. If the army keep doing their jobs, overturning lawlessness, punishing people, and revealing people's sin, the community will rise up and potentially turn violent. Capricorn's view of physical authority is a picture of their acceptance of Biblical authority – there's no fear, no compliance, no respect.

In the church we're seeing what this culture calls "11 month Christians." The school holiday begins early December and many people who have jobs take a long holiday this month. When the "festive season" begins, people begin relaxing, partying, even-heavier drinking - which leads to irresponsible parenting, violence, sexual abuse … Sodom and Gomorra. Some of our youth are making poor choices, blatantly turning their back on God and the Church. Disappointment is surrounding us. A whole year (or two) of pouring into young-people goes out the window in a day. The immediate pleasures of this world are out-weighing their knowledge of the Holy Spirit and the commitments they've made in their faith. I'm praying the seeds that were planted in them aren't drowned and destroyed; God needs to bring water and continue His work!

This is the picture of a community and a people who need prayer, who need God, who need revival. Please pray for these challenges and the ministry that needs to be done this December month and in 2012. Pray that my voice and what I'm hearing the Lord ask me to speak will be heard and accepted. I'm not asking for life to be smooth and without trial. Trials over the last 2 years have brought me so close to Christ, but I am asking that God's work will be done and that His plans will take root and flourish in the midst of this war-zone. Praying that the Church will rise up and bring revival to a community in desperate need of a Savior.

Clearly, this is a big deal here in South Africa. Living Hope has teams of people doing outreaches in our local communities, mobile testing and education on HIV Prevention.

Getting to Zero 2011 World AIDS Day Theme

Getting to Zero - Zero AIDS-Related Deaths: 2011 World AIDS Day Theme Announced - (September 5 - Cape Town, South Africa) World AIDS Day this year is about "Getting to Zero." Zero New HIV Infections. Zero Discrimination and Zero AIDS Related Deaths. Backed by the United Nations the "Getting to Zero" campaign runs until 2015 and builds on last year's successful World AIDS Day "Light for Rights" initiative encompassing a range of vital issues identified by key affected populations.

The World AIDS Campaign focus on "Zero AIDS Related Deaths" signifies a push towards greater access to treatment for all; a call for governments to act now. A demand they honor promises like the Abuja declaration and that African Governments at very least hit agreed targets for domestic spending on health and HIV in support of the human right to the best attainable level of health care for all.

It's a global campaign that spotlights how our fundamental right to health is intrinsically and

inextricably linked to other basic rights – The right to food, to shelter, to freedom, to clean water and safety. Crucial too is access to affordable lifesaving quality medicines free from the crippling effects of excessive profit taking. In the coming months the World AIDS Campaign will be spotlighting a range of Getting to Zero initiatives to help see an end to AIDS related deaths

The vision for this year's World AIDS Day and beyond may be aspirational but the journey towards its attainment is laid with concrete milestones.

1. Sexual transmission of HIV reduced by half.

2. Vertical transmission of HIV eliminated and AIDS-related maternal deaths reduced by half.

3. All new HIV infections prevented among people who use drugs.

International Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving. The time of year when it's getting cooler, pumpkin flavored everything is on the store shelves, football is in the air ... Here in Cape Town, it's HOT. Summer is approaching, there's no pumpkin anything here. I miss American Fall.

The best we could do is gather all the Americans (and their friends) and have a make-shift Thanksgiving. It was fun being together and seeing people I haven't seen in such a long time - all international volunteers doing ministry in areas of Cape Town. So, here's a recap of my Thanksgiving dinner:

. Average education level of adults = 9th grade

. Most adults in Capricorn speak Afrikaans as their first language. Jobs often require good English speaking skills. Most newspapers and books are in English because that's the 'common' language. There are variations of Afrikaans spoken - slurred/slang versions are most common in Capricorn.

. Many adults can't read or write proficiently, resulting in lack of confidence, inability to get an upper-level job, etc.

These are just a few factors that have been blatantly obvious to me as to why this is a relational culture. The adults are verbal and visual learners because education isn't a priority (and the standard of education is bleeding over to children/teens). I'm watching this play out spiritually. If you can't read, and especially if you can't read in the language your Bible is written in, then you're really dependent upon what you hear others say about Christ, the words that are preached on a Sunday morning, the examples that are lived out in front of you ... those are the things that communicate the loudest message to the people I work with. We have teens in Afternoon Teen Club that can't write their names or addresses, we have adults that will NOT read aloud in meetings because they either can't or are too embarrassed to mess up. This culture is not internet driven yet. This culture is not reading CNN.com or up to date on the latest technology for faster information into their hands.

I'm realizing how significant it is to live a life worthy of Christ. I'm realizing that the way I interact with someone communicates. This culture looks around them for truth, and Truth isn't always around them. If someone is too lazy to come to church on a Sunday, then they don't get the podcast or sermon notes. If a youth misses a Friday Night Youth Gathering, then they missed their weekly message and missed time to be with like-minded people. Yes, these examples are also true for other countries that are technology-based, but I'm realizing how crucial every interaction can be. We are a walking-Gospel. We must be the hands, feet and mouths of Jesus. Patience, grace and consistency must be in me each day.

I'm praying you live with this sort of urgency in your life too. I don't want to waste one moment to speak life and live out the example of Christlikeness.

Leadership Development in Schools

For the past 3 months, Living Hope has been privileged to lead an after school program for 20 students in teaching them leadership skills and concepts. The school chose 20 of their top students in grade 7 classes (called The Prefects) and allowed them to meet with us and strengthen their relational and leadership skills.

We taught the basics of Group Dynamics and how to work as a team, Problem Solving Skills and Methods, led discussions about leaving a legacy, and built leadership confidence. It was one of my favorite ministry opportunities thus far.

Today was our last day with this group because school ends soon and exams and year-end prep begins. I'm looking forward to more opportunities like this in 2012!

5k: Diabetes Awareness Walk ... a catalyst for deep ministry

Living Hope Support Groups held a Diabetes Awareness 5k Walk this weekend. I rallied our youth, arranged transportation and got us all movin' together! These youth need unifying outings, they need to hangout with adults that are walking the Faith, and these outings serve as great ways of finding out about their lives and connecting on a deeper level with them.

As I walked with two of our older girls (one in 12th grade, one in 11th grade), I heard them talking about relationships and difficulties going on in the community. I asked them, "Do you want to get married?" They emphatically said, "No!" I inquired as to why they held such strong, negative opinions about marriage, and they began to speak about how they see their families disfunction and they don't want those struggles in their lives. Both of these girls have 'daddy-issues.' They have hard backgrounds, and I understand why they feel so strongly about not getting married. We discussed the fact that Paul says in the New Testament that it's better to stay single if you can so that you won't have distractions and can focus on God. I countered that thought and reminded them that marriage was created by God and it's a picture of the church - how we are to serve each other and minister together for God's glory. I was amazed at how these two young girls have such wounds and hurt from their life-experience, and they're using those wounds to be firm in thought about how they want to live their own lives. I'm seeing how this youth-generation wants change. They want to be respected and I believe they will change the hurt through their dependance upon Christ. Imagine if all the youth of your city rose up for what's right and changed generational patterns so that they live family-life the way God designed. That would be amazing!

Conversations like I had today are shedding light on the hurt and reminding me that one changed-life or changed-perception is success! Just imagine those theological, life-altering conversations going on through winded breath as we walked in 90 degree sun-scorching heat. The 5k was great!

For those of you who have generously sent American Cake-mix to my abode in South Africa, THANK YOU! Here's a picture of one of the successful baked-goods being shared. This baking occasion was for a colleagues' Bridal Shower. As you can see, there are lots of store-bought things on the table. Not many people bake around here. Cake mixes are rare in South Africa. There are some for purchase, but they're expensive and not nearly as good as good ole' American cake.

So to all who have blessed South Africa with American cake, thank you! I think I have a baking-ministry now.

What is a calling?

Do you really know 'your calling?'

Do you use the phrase 'your calling' as an excuse?

When I was in the USA in October, I heard a lot of people use the phrase, "I'm called to ____" or "What I feel called to do is ______" or "God's is calling me to ______" or "That's not my calling." I was curious as to why this phrase is being thrown around like the latest slang-word. Throw in the word, 'will' and you've even got a greater emphatic statement. "God's will" is the adjacent phrase that we're all trying to discover for ourselves yet each of us are coming up blank. Maybe we're blank because we're trying to fit our current lives, our current addictions, our current time consumptions into the life we WANT God to call us to.

I firmly believe that if you're walking in a deep, devoted, results-shown walk with the Lord, then He will direct your every step. You will be convicted by each decision you make. You will make the choice that directs others and yourself to Christ and not to the world. You will find yourself in the Will of God when your EVERY DAY is planned and executed for Him.

I don't speak out of expertise. I speak out of great-failure-experience. I speak out of the knowledge that my life here in South Africa is DEPENDENT upon my hearing from the Lord and being willing to say 'no' to things of this world that used to be part of my life: TV, friends, routinely going out to eat, the latest technology, celebrity gossip, going to concerts, hosting parties, browsing online ... all the things American-culture is wrapped around. But truly finding 'Your Calling' is a difficult thing; it will set you apart from everyone else. God's purpose for your life is unlike anyone else's. He wants to use each person different; He has made each of us differently.

It might be painful. It might strip you from all your comforts. But finding what God wants for YOUR life is the most beautiful gift. I encourage you to rethink how you voice 'Your Calling' and ask God for His purpose for your life.

The Official October Update:

Thank you to all who have been part of this recent 'Journey to the USA!' Meagan and I were truly blessed, busy, lived the "American pace," spoke to many ministry partners, gave updates, and were filled to the brim with love and food! Time was too short; there were many people we didn't get to connect with - and for that I apologize, but I hope everyone knows that it wasn't a lack of interest or lack of love on my part, it was a time-issue. I really appreciate everyone's interest in this mission. I feel the love and covet your prayers.

Here are a few points of update and a photo-recap of October:

1. Funding: I'm 90% funded for 2012! I'm absolutely shocked and honored that fundraising has gone so well thus far. It's been nothing of my own doing, God has gathered His team to partner; I'm grateful that God would burden the hearts of His children to give to ministry in South Africa. THANK YOU!

2. I am overflowing: God used my American friends and family to fill me up (spiritually, emotionally, physically, mentally). I'm now back on the ground pouring out and realizing that these South African people take a lot of energy from me. This first week back on the ground has been exhausting and draining, but it's been your prayers and investment in me that is sustaining me. God is using others to remind me of His plans and purposes. THANK YOU!

3. Living Hope Life Skills Department (Afternoon Clubs, School Ministry, Parenting Courses, Preschool Ministry, Leadership Development) is going through evaluations. We're looking at the last few years of ministry and looking forward. What will 2012 hold? Changes, we know that! Pray with us that we will listen to the Lord and be guided by His plans for Living Hope Life Skills! I'm excited about some of the strategic changes and plans being discussed. Pray for how to implement God's Big-Vision!

seals and whales and sharks... oh my!

Only in Cape Town, South Africa can you drive home from a hectic, long day and stop along the road, walk to the beach and find seals swimming, whales jumping, and sharks circling. As Meagan and I drove home from Capricorn, we saw an unusually large number of cars and people standing looking at the ocean. We too pulled over the car, wanting to see what they were point at. We found a pod of whales splashing and making beautiful jumps in the air! We decided to make it an even better pause by walking to the nearest bakery for a hot croissant and then sat and watched the whales some more. After awhile, we got back in our car and saw another mass of cars and people along another shore miles away from where we'd just been. We stopped again, wondering if they were admiring the whales or if there was something else. We parked and walked along the beach to get to the 'action.' We saw seals swimming and jumping; then, as if watching a tennis match, we jolted our heads to the other side of the landscape and saw shark fins circling near the beach. The black 'shark warning flag' on the beach was raised and we were an amazed crowd as we watched the sea-life dance in front of us.

I'm so thankful for living in such a beautiful country. God's creation is amazing!

it's Holiday Club time ... again?

This year-round school thing throws me. Seems like we just had a school holiday ... where I wore my tail off doing Holiday Clubs. Well, it's here again. Unfortunately, I only participated in one day of Holiday Club in Capricorn because I'm headed to the US this week. Here are a few highlights from my day:

. When trying to get the children in age-groups, I asked one little boy (who is known to be 'devilish' and too clever for all of us),

"How old are you, D?"

He replied in a firm tone, "How old are YOU?"

I smiled, holding back a chuckle, "D, How old are you?"

He got closer, rolled his neck in a circular motion and in a sassy tone asked, "How old do I need to be?" Later I found out, little D is 7 years old but clearly he already acts like a teenager.

. We taught the kids a new song today. After teaching it, practicing it all the way through and then really driving it home by doing it 'full out' once, the adult song leader asked the crowd, "Did you like that song?" One of our 4 year olds (who rarely says a word) yells, "NO!" The song leader ignored him and asked, "Do you want to do the song one more time?" The little boy even louder yells, "NO!" His honesty, awesome! I felt the same way since we were beating that song into the ground!

. We had 22 teens in Club this afternoon. It was so great spending time with them. The girls wanted to play net-ball. This sport is still foreign to me. It's like basketball, but you can't dribble and only certain positions on the court can shoot to score. I played on the court today! The girls laughed and laughed at me because I wasn't going to play by their rules. I told them, "I don't know how to play net ball, you don't seem to want to teach me, so I'm going to play basketball!" They thought that was hilarious. So, then we all started playing with our own rules - that's where they get the phrase, "it was unruly!" I had the best time laughing and being silly with our teens today. It's nice not to be 'authority' all the time.

Pray for Holiday Clubs going on in South Africa this week.

Pray that kids and teens come to know the Lord.

Pray that those that already know Christ will have a fire ignited and seek to know Him in a deeper way!

I had the privilege of spending the better part of 2 days with Keith and Kelly. They came to South Africa to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. I showed them around town -some of our favorite tourist spots, talked about ministry (the ups and downs), received great encouragement, and were treated to some very nice meals that I wouldn't get to experience without their treat! I was honored and enjoyed every minute with them.

They even brought me a suitcase FULL of things on my wish-list. I was honored and so grateful!

While walking in the Company Gardens, Kelly asked me, "What do you miss most about America?" I said, "This." I went on to tell them both that I really miss people that I've known for a long time. I miss people that challenge me spiritually. I miss talking about life with people older than me, getting their perspective and gleaning wisdom. Keith is a brilliant business man and Kelly is his side-kick (along for every adventure and his greatest support). Driving in the car, Keith was just telling me about his life right now, things going on in business and in his spiritual life and I was totally encouraged. I love seeing how God is at play everywhere and how those of us living vastly different lives in totally different worlds can speak love and wisdom and encouragement into each other ... for endurance and growth and steadfastness!

I miss art.

I miss creating.

I know God has a purpose in giving me an art-education, but I'm waiting to use it fully here in my new land of South Africa.

I borrowed an idea by a blogger, Lauren Johnston, whose blog is entitled, Inspired by the Creator. I don't know this woman personally, someone sent me a link to her blog because they thought I'd enjoy her creativity! She's an amazing artist and paints visuals of scripture and what God puts on her heart. This blog post: http://inspiredbythecreator.blogspot.com/2011/08/god-of-this-city.html inspired me to recreate this lesson with my South African teens.

This lesson incorporated music, physical art, and creative thinking.

The lesson went like this:

1. I first let them listen to the song lyrics of God of This City. They closed their eyes, laid their heads on the table, and most importantly were silent!

2. As the song played a second time, I asked them to write down words that came to mind - I gave examples: city, Capricorn, love, Lord, purpose ...

3. They were then given lots of art medium (all from our Living Hope supply closet given by volunteers who come short-term): oil pastels, color pencils, chalk, markers, crayons and a large sheet of construction paper.

4. I told them to draw a picture of whatever this song meant to them. I urged them to think in terms of their own community of Capricorn and what God wants Capricorn to be.

5. With the song playing softly, they drew!

Ironically, all of my 'artsy' girls did not show up for Club that day. The attendees were mainly boys and most are the boys who RARELY speak to me, and if they speak, it's in grunts. These boys are usually hard to work with because of their behavior problems and lack of respect for adults (clearly because of their home-lives). This day, the boys were quiet, participated in ALL activities and instructions, were respectful, and at the end of the day, one boy said, "that was really relaxing." Another told me they enjoyed Club being "different" that day!

I had a wonderful time with our rebellious teens that day! Art bonded us!

Needs Assessment

Recently, Living Hope held a training session from an outside organization who's doing fabulous work in South Africa. They call themselves Warehouse (http://www.warehouse.org.za/index.php). This past year, I've been captivated by tools and strategies for helping relieve poverty - not just our outward eye-view of physical poverty, but emotional, spiritual, mental poverty. I've been reading, collecting ideas, thoughts, transforming personal ministry practices in these areas. The Warehouse's philosophy and tools hit me right where I'm at. God is so good about bringing the right people at the right time!

My favorite part of the training was identifying the 10 Human Needs. This list classifies and helps identify how people react and 'make up for' the lack of certain 'human needs' which lead to poverty mentality.

The 10 Basic Human Needs:

Participation

Creation

Affection

Identity

Understanding

Protection

Freedom

Subsistence (working, being useful)

Idleness (rest)

Spirituality (relationship to God)

After talking about these in depth, many 'poverty actions' came to mind. For instance, it always bothered me that during the month of December for Christmas Celebrations, families will spend hundreds of Rand on name-brand shoes for their children or new, expensive dresses for Christmas parties. I didn't understand why they would spend their December monthly income on such extravagant items. Why is the child down the road literally going without food for days, yet wearing Nike shoes? When studying the Warehouse method of identifying Human Needs, I now understand that some of these families will overcompensate in one area to overlook another. They spend their money on outward acceptance (name brand shoes) so that people will look at them as if they're able to provide for their children, they're able to afford 'extras.' When they step out of Capricorn, people won't look 'down' on them or judge their physical appearance. Essentially saying, "people's view of them is more important than their basic need for food and daily sustenance." And yes, the clothes wear out, the cycle continues ... I can go on and on about how all of us compensate for the lack of our Human Needs. This list and other training from Warehouse gave me tangible ways to spot these needs; they showed us how to prioritize ministry. They gave us ways to approach the community and ask individuals their opinions in order to gain favor with the locals and provide local-involved ministry (empowering the individual that you really want to engage and minister to)!

That's just a preview of my lessons learned. More to come. I urge you to soak in this lesson as well!

Local Missions Conference

I was shocked and honored when a local church (that I've never been to) asked me to be their opening speaker at their VERY FIRST Missions Conference. This church (Full Gospel Church in Fish Hoek, South Africa) is a mixed-culture church - predominantly white South African with lots of other local cultures mixed in. When I sat down with one of their pastors to get details of this event and to find out what exactly I was to speak about, the pastor told me that the church is not currently very 'missional.' The church has recently been flooded with teachings on The Great Commission (Matt 28) and the pastors have been preparing their congregation on the necessity of 'selfless service' and the church's responsibility to GO! So, I began praying and asking God what I was supposed to speak about. I felt unworthy and inadequate, and I was thankful for both. I spent weeks looking through scriptures that "called me" to missions here in South Africa and I was guided to speak about HOW I was called to the Mission Field.

I told them that this journey began years before I even knew what was going on. I prayed a prayer that has been powerful and fruitful:

"Lord, before giving me what I want, make me who I need to be."

That bold prayer changed my life forever. It changed my perspective, my purpose, my direction.

I told the church that I sat through 8 Global Impact Celebrations (our Shades Mountain Missions Conference) before I really tuned in as if the message was for me. I would sit in the congregation and pray for our youth, for families, for singles... to give their lives to missions, to GO, to be obedient ... but all the while, I was content with 'my ministry' at Shades. I found great pleasure that I was already on the mission field at my church. But, that Shades mission field was only the beginning. It was the training ground for something bigger.

I gave my testimony - talking about my dream to be an artist, all my schooling faced my desire to succeed in 'this life.' I then told about how God grabbed my attention when I was in University and I began helping lead Youth Small Groups; my heart for true, walking-life discipleship began there! My part-time work with the Student Ministry at Shades Mountain led to a full-time job there, and that led into many 'transitioning' positions within ministry. I was given multiple opportunities to serve internationally on mission (short-term); my eyes were opened to God's work amongst the nations. My heart stayed in South Africa and I knew this is where God was calling me. But it was through 2 specific chapters in Matthew that I was called: Matt 7 & 8. Praying through those scriptures, I knew God was asking me to be stripped from my 'American comforts' and step out into His plan.

- I was to take the log out of my eye so that I could cleanse myself from judgement (Matt 7:5)

- I was to ASK God what His plan was. Not just to continue in my ways and my own plans (Matt 7:7-8)

- The Golden Rule gripped me. I would want someone to show me Jesus. I'd want someone to sacrifice their comfort for me. I'd want someone to literally show me how to "enter the narrow gate." (Matt 7: 12-13)

- I wanted to bear God's good fruit. I wanted RESULTS! I didn't want to be thrown into the fire (Matt 7:18-20)

- I did NOT want to hear God say 'that He never knew me' (Matt 7:21-23)

- I wanted to live a wise life - with my foundation in Christ (Matt 7:24)

- I wanted to live in faith in Jesus' authority (Matt 7:28)

- I wanted to touch those that seem unlovable; I want to give healing life to others (Matt 8:3)

- I wanted to have faith like the Centurion - when Jesus praised his faith and was proud of his belief (Matt 8:10)

- I heard God say that I was to be a light in a dark place - showing Jesus' purpose in discipleship and living a life worthy of Christ (Matt 8:14-17)

- I needed to drop my socially acceptable excuses - that I was 'taking care' of people, I had a responsibility to stay. I held on to the excuse of too little funds, not being married, needed to wait on the 'right time' to go and serve Christ. My excuses vanished in Jesus' words in Matt 8:18-22

- And then Jesus reminded me that He is over 'even the winds and the waves' - so what was I to fear? (Matt 8:23-27)

- And the words "go" have many meanings in the spiritual realm. God's power in the spoken Word is enough for me! (Matt 8:32)

So, I spoke. I watched a church attentive to God's Word and call upon each of their lives. The Missions Conference was kicked off and I was humbled and honored to be a small part! I'm watching God's plan unfold and the importance of living amongst the people become fruitful in trust, in respect, in God's purposes! This journey has just begun to take root!

Bonus material to this story...

Because I had to be at the church early (6pm) to test some media I used, meet with the pastor, pray, etc ... I was so hungry. It was 9:45pm before I got out of the church. I think it was because I'd been talking about America and was nostalgic, I ran to McDonalds for a chicken sandwich and fries! MMMmmm... it's such a treat to eat out. I guess I was celebrating God's goodness and faithfulness.

Youth Camp SUCCESS!

What a weekend! Youth Camp went FABULOUSLY!
Thank you for all your prayers and concern. My health is still weak, but God's perfect strength sustained me until I could crash on Sunday afternoon. I know this was yet another piece of proof that God wants us to rely on Him for strength and wisdom.

As you know, the Capricorn Community Church Youth had to 'earn' the privilege of attending Camp this year. They had to attend Youth activities, Bible Studies, participate in Fundraisers for Camp funds and show a genuine interest in being part of the physical Body of Christ, THE CHURCH! This has proven to be the most amazing lesson our youth have learned. There were many times before camp that I'd think, "Man, I wish ______ were coming with us, they really need to hear what's going to be said." Or I'd entertain the thought of allowing some to come that didn't quite earn enough points and give some grace, but I didn't. I stuck to our agreement and had no grace for those that didn't follow-through. We heard the youth numerous times talk about how much the appreciated the 'point system' and even the parents agreed with our weeding-out of those that don't really want to grow in Christ, many just come for the outings and 'fun' given. So, God is teaching us all that we must work and sacrifice. What a sweet, valuable lesson for our Capricorn Church!

This camp was vastly different than last year's camp. We had NOT ONE discipline issue. Everyone participated in EVERY activity. There was NO COMPLAINING. The youth were TOTALLY RESPECTFUL. The sessions were long and involved a lot of group participation and looking up scripture and giving feedback and being spiritually, emotionally vulnerable with each other ... and they did it all! The group of 17 youth that came with us were those that really want to grow. They're the ones that usually get punished for the errors of others and the whole group gets privileges taken away because of the 'naughty ones.' But this time, the distractions were taken away and these youth were able to focus solely on Christ and their relationship with Him and truly take hold of what God has for them. I was in tears one session as the youth were opening their eyes to scriptures that were beginning to take root. Youth were speaking into the lives of their peers - giving each other encouragement and rebukes out of God's Word. This past year and a half have been very trying to me. I've had to wait on God's timing to move forward and wait on the youth and congregation to ready themselves. My impatience and desire for them to grow has been personally difficult. But I cried because I felt so blessed to be in God's presence with these particular youth. I felt blessed that God was allowing me to tangibly see the fruit of His work. I felt blessed to have waited on His timing!

The imagery of a tree and it's roots and fruits were strongly emphasized in each session.
We took the Youth through 4 sessions:
1. Who am I? - Identity in Christ
2. Where am I? - figuring out how mature their faith is and areas where they need to grow
3. Reality of Satan - (led by Severo) - speaking of Satan's attacks on Believers, strongholds that keep us from moving forward in our relationship with Christ.
4. Reality of Temptation - (led by Meagan) - about what Satan will try to do after camp, the temptations that we have the ability to overcome through Christ.

There were tears of brokenness, there were prayers of renewed seriousness in relationship to Christ, there was power moving through our youth! God allowed our oldest youth girl (12th grader) to see how wayward she'd become and she rededicated her life to Christ! I had the privilege of praying with her specifically - and it was especially neat because we prayed for Christ to use her life after school, after she graduates... and this is a prayer and thought that rarely crosses the minds and hearts of the youth in Capricorn. God grabbed hold of her heart at just the right time; God put her on this Camp to hear exactly what she needed to hear in this crucial time in her life. I can't wait to see what God does in her and in the rest of the youth that He's growing!

We also had a time around the camp-fire where we allowed the youth to encourage each other - speak positive words into each others' lives. There were amazing, heart-felt things said to one-another, but the most meaningful of all was what one girl said to Meagan and myself: she said, "Meagan, when I met you, I thought you were boring. You were quiet and didn't play around. Mel, when I met you, I thought, 'what does she have in common with us?' I didn't think an American could relate to our lives. But, I've seen how much you guys love us and how much we can learn from you. I've seen you come to Capricorn so tired, so weary, but you come because you love us and you want to show us Christ!" I was thankful for the many months of simply showing up in Capricorn; I was proud of the perseverance that God allowed us to have. All glory to God for what He's doing through the lives of leaders that have nothing to give but Jesus - we don't have money, we don't have catchy tricks, we don't have unique gifts ... all we have is Jesus and the love He has given us for Capricorn... and that's all we (and they) need.

I'm so proud to be part of what God is doing in South Africa - specifically Capricorn Community Church!

More Shades Hands to Help!

We have 2 amazing ladies from Shades here in Cape Town right now: Susan & Elizabeth! Both have been to Living Hope & Capricorn Community Church previously.

In the mornings, they are with Gail & the Support Group Leaders - doing in-home Support Groups & leading devotions with the clients. In the afternoons, they've helped me with a new documenting-project. We're trying to make files & compile updated info on each of our children & teens. This is a HUGE project because we're needing to make detailed documents with health information, home-environment reports and evaluations, take stock of each person living in the home, what sort of income/grants the home is taking in ... And so much more. This is quite the project & these ladies are helping us with in-put & getting us started in the right direction!

So thankful for church-international-partners!

Please pray for our Youth Camp this weekend. We're taking 17 youth and 5 adults.

Pray:

. That youth would receive Christ as their Lord and Savior

. That youth would yearn to dig deeper into their current relationship with the Lord

. For the message of Identity in Christ, Freedom from Bondage, and Living a Fruitful Life in Christ would be received

. For good behavior - taking youth out of their non-disciplined environments is often difficult - enforcing even the smallest rule for the purposes of their safety and others' well-being can be challenging.

. For unity and relationships among the youth to grow

. For youth to step up and lead amongst their peers!

Youth Camp Fundraiser Update

Thank you for the many prayers for our Capricorn Community Church (first ever) Youth Camp Fundraiser! We collected around R2500 ($350 US)! Because I was still sick and couldn't leave the house, I didn't get to see the event in full-form, but I got to see video and photos and heard detailed stories about all the people that were there and how unifying the event was for not only our youth but our entire church.

The youth invited lot of other churches in Capricorn and many churches we don't currently have relationships with were in attendance! As you'll see from the photos, there were a variety of 'acts' that added to the worship of the night (dancers, singing groups, choirs, mimes). I was so proud to hear the reports from our church leaders and from our youth. Praise God for all the hands, feet and hearts that spent energy on this Worship-Event. And our Camp budget is appreciative too!

I have a little friend in the US who I adore! I've known her for years and when she was learning my name, it came out: Menalie! We keep in touch through email & notes but my heart aches not to be near her. I see Christ's love in her spirit and God has big things for this little girl! Today is the first day I've worked in the office since 11 August. As you may know, PNEUMONIA took me out for quite some time. I see lots of purpose that has come from this 'being still' - God uses everything for His glory, but it's nice to be healing and getting physically better!
Today I worked half day from home and half day in office. My body is TIRED but I'm thankful to be back in business and back with my work-friends!
Thank you for your prayers and concern. Keep praying that my body keeps healing and I recover fully very soon!

on suffering

Arthur Mathews, missionary in China for 9 years, held in house-arrest 4 years because of that ministry, writes a poignant statement on the matter of suffering and purposes of God's plan:

"We tend to look at the circumstances of life in terms of what they may do to our cherished hopes and conveniences, and we shape our decisions and reactions accordingly. When a problem threatens, we rush to God, not to seek his perspective, but to ask him to deflect the trouble. Our self-concern takes priority over whatever it is that God might be trying to do through the trouble...
An escapist generation reads security, prosperity, and physical well-being as evidences of God's blessing. Thus when he puts suffering and affliction into our hands, we misread his signals and misinterpret his intentions."

Guilty myself of being in the "escapist generation & mind-set." Asking God to remind me of His plan & lessons each day.

A few days back, I posted this blog (http://meldill.blogspot.com/2011/08/another-prayer-need-youth-camp.html) about our youth camp fundraiser that's coming up. Well, it's tomorrow! Please pray for the follow-through and success of this event. Like I've said before, it's not so much about the fundraising as it is about teaching our youth some lessons about earning things (moving away from hand-outs), giving leadership opportunities, uniting the youth group and the church as a whole.

I'm in great doubt that I'll be in attendance. I'm still battling pneumonia, but the good news is I feel MUCH better than I did even yesterday. I do see my healing ahead; I just don't want to rush the process. It's been 15 days since this whole pneumonia process started and most of it I've been in the bed and confined to the house. Yes, I'm taking care of myself and my sweet friend Meagan has had to take lots of care of me, but I really am recovering and think I'll be world-ready in just a few days. I'll keep you posted. Still coughing, but now breathing effortlessly!

We all know we (especially Americans from where I come from) have a lot of stuff. We collect things, we have a 'just-in-case' cabinet, and many have garages of things hidden away so we don't have to be reminded of all the things we own or are responsible for. The book, Radical by David Platt (http://www.radicalthebook.com/), defines so well what our priorities should be, but many times we don't know how to make changes in our daily consumption or how to curb consumer desires enough to make a difference... That is unless you're literally selling everything & moving to a shack in an 'un-reached village' somewhere. God hasn't called us all to move & inhabit foreign lives, but He has called us to obedience.

An article by Mark Powley from Relevant Magazine entitled Breaking Our Consumer Addiction
(http://www.relevantmagazine.com/god/mission/features/26452-breaking-our-consumer-addiction) caught my eye this week... Here's a bit of the main message:

"So what kind of habits can reshape our desires? There are many: Sabbath worship with all our soul and strength; sharing life with other Christians; practical action for the poor, and many more. But Jesus did prescribe one particular habit to remake the desires of would-be disciples with plenty of stuff to their name: sell your possessions.

In fact, in Luke's Gospel. every time someone increases their possessions, it coincides with moving away from the Kingdom. Bigger barns, new fields, new oxen—it didn't matter what it was; their hearts were just following their newly acquired stuff. But to His followers, Jesus said "sell your possessions" and "those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples" (Luke 12:33 and 14:33).

There's no point turning this into a new law—our response should be Spirit-inspired, grace-filled and creatively unique. But this is definitely a call to action. So what could that possibly look like?"

When I was back in the US for a visit in January 2011, I was often asked if it was hard to be back in the world I left or "if I was disgusted by America" like so many returning from mission trips can be. I had to think long & hard about my answer. Was it hard? Was I disgusted? The answer ended up being yes! I was disgusted that when I was in my American-lifestyle that I didn't realize how rich I was. I complained that I didn't have money to do this, that, or the other, but when I looked at my budget, there always seemed to be room for a lunch at Panera or a coffee at Starbucks (all for the sake of my social-life and spending time with other people). I am disgusted that what we label as "needs" are often "wants" and what we think we must have isn't always the best use of our money.

Since living in South Africa, my priorities have drastically changed just because of culture. I still crave Starbucks, would love to have TV (I'm really missing TLC and the Today Show), and yearn to go out to eat each week as I used to, but when all my cultural norms and American acceptable spending environments are stripped away, I now look at the American luxury lifestyle as a waste. My new reality is that I'm praying through the "how" of raising money for simple, practical living-expenses to stay on the mission-field, and when I think about how I used to spend money and what I could have 'given up' to help support missions, I'm disgusted by my past cultural spending and selfishness. My world is viewed through a new lens. I only wish I'd had that lens while I could have been more generous. The lens isn't full of judgment; its really just full of disappointment in myself and my ignorance while rich. I was truly disgusted with 'self.'

Praying that you will turn your desires over to God before culture engulfs you. Pray about what you can sell for the sake of missions & giving to others. Take Jesus' commands literally! I promise you won't regret it!

Had to have seen it coming with my exhaustion lately, but I'm on the mend. God's strength & character of healing will pull me through. This is just part of "be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

Children's Sunday School Outing

With amazing connections from Living Hope, our little church was given the opportunity to take 27 of our Sunday School children on an outing to the movies. Pick n' Pay, the local grocery store, sponsored the event. It was a promotion of the movie 'Rio' and a theme party! The whole event was free to us; we just had to provide transportation, and in our little tiny church, that was a feat in itself. Transportation was sorted, permission slips to/from all the parents, color-coded groups made and emergency numbers attached to each child, and we were off!

It was so much fun watching these kids take it all in - many who had NEVER been to such a large mall nor ever been to the city just miles away. Upon arrival at the event, the kids were each fitted with a long-sleeve 'Rio' t-shirt, given a goodie box with all kinds of candy and a cupcake with the 'Rio movie art' on top, and then they were let loose in a large room to play and get 'sugar highed.' There were balloon sculptors, face painters, games and more. All the adults just sat back and watched the children go wild, participating in all the exciting activities. I was snapping pictures and taking it all in myself!

Once the pre-party ended, we all lined up, each was given a huge box of popcorn and a soda. We took our seats and watched 'Rio' and had a grand time (... but that wasn't without a few toilet breaks during the movie. We had small children who can't sit through an hour and a half movie with a soda the size of their bodies and NOT go to the toilet).

Once the movie ended, each child was given a Pick n' Pay sling-back-bag loaded with goodies (tooth brush, hand-cloths, tissues, water bottle, etc) AND LUNCH (a chicken salad sandwich, smoothie drink and a chocolate dessert). Need I remind you these are little children, carrying all their free-goodies home was a sight. Much to my surprise there was one last prize handed out at the last exit door - LARGE BALLOON BALLS WITH SOUND-MAKING SAND. Picture this, not only are we juggling all their left-over popcorn, drinks, coats, but the people KEPT giving us more things. I know I sound ungrateful because it was a lot to carry, but seriously, couldn't they have called it quits before the large balloon balls? You should have seen us walking through the mall to the parking deck trying to keep up with our 27 children, 27 coats, 27 backpacks, and 27 large, noisy balloon balls. Ridiculous.

But oh, the children had a blast! It was a day they won't soon forget. I hope they remember the adults that spent time with them that day and that they continue to add to their little love-tanks the love Christ has given to us for these sweet Capricorn children. My heart is full thinking about how much love God has given for them and all the lessons He's taught me through their little lives.

day off at the beach

Tuesday, 9 Aug was Woman's Day in South Africa. This public holiday allowed for some time-off and time at the BEACH! Although it's still technically winter, the sun shines bright and hot most of the mid-day, so I got to hangout on the beach, bundled up in a winter coat with a picnic lunch and a book. It was wonderful to just relax and watch the waves, listen to the sounds of the birds and the ocean and think about what a wonderful creation God made... not to mention how lucky I feel to live in such a beautiful setting as South Africa. I think the Lord blessed South Africa with such beauty because the work and life can be so hard. Praise the Lord for His blessings!

This was my very first South African baby shower and oh what an adventure it was. There were so many women, lots of food and always something going on. This event was especially special because the mom-to-be is part of my South African adopted-family, the Daniels. This was my friend Meagan's sister's shower!

another prayer need - Youth Camp Fundraiser

We're busy planning for our next attempt at fundraising for Youth Camp. A 'Singing Evening' fundraiser consists of a church or youth group opening their venue, having food for sale, inviting people to bless the congregation with an 'act of worship' (a song, dance, poem, etc), a Worship Band, and maybe a challenging message. Guests are required to pay a small entry fee (this case Rand 10 = approx $1.5 US) and all proceeds go toward the church's cause.
This event has caused our youth to look beyond a 'hand-out,' have forward thinking, plan in groups, budget and FOLLOW-THROUGH with a task. This has been a big test in leadership and trust. Our youth seem to be taking ownership, feel a sense of pride that they can open their church to the community and raise funds toward going to Camp (9-11 September 2011).
Please pray for this venture and all that it entails. This is a huge experiment and we're praying that it's a success!

Pray for Mia!

This little girl has stolen my heart.

Many of you who follow this journey have seen my Mia before. She's one that God has brought me - one to love, one to pray for, one to support, one to challenge, one to discipline, one to cherish. Little Mia has taught me so much in her young 4 years of life. I've known her since she was 1 years old, walking around Capricorn in the filthiest of clothes, eating out of dumpsters, not being cared for properly. Since that time, she jumped into my heart and God has connected us in a special way. Mia is doing MUCH better than she was when I first met her in 2008. She's been through a lot, but God is guiding her steps and using people around her life to love her and show her Christ's ultimate love.

I get to see Mia every Sunday as I pick her up and bring her to Sunday School. I'm determined that this child is going to be introduced to seeds of faith and the knowledge of Christ at an early age - what she does with it is up to her, but she's a very clever child and I know God has a plan for her in this tough little town called Capricorn. I don't know how anyone could survive Capricorn without knowing Christ.

There are some developments taking place in Mia's life. I can't give many more details, but I can say that August is an important month in the life of this child and her future living arrangements. I'm working alongside her 'family' and trying to be involved in the protection and care of Mia as much as I can. After reading the book, When Helping Hurts, I'm overly cautious on HOW I help, but staying in contact and regular visits seem to be the best and only way I can assist right now. I know that's not much 'detail' to give you, but I wanted you to see Mia's face, get a picture of her need for Christ, and get you to pray for the events of this month.

. Please pray that God's will be done despite the government policies and regulations.

. Pray that Mia is emotionally and mentally protected through it all

. Pray that Mia's actions are obedient and not disruptive in the house

. Pray that the home where she's staying will have unconditional love and continue to support Mia

REWIND - Shades Women bring new ministry to South Africa

This team of 9 women and 1 really confident male
brought new ministry to Living Hope and Capricorn Community Church! Specifically...

- Abortion Recovery Counselling and Training to be a Counselor

- Faithbooking - teaching Believers in Christ to write down their 'Faith-story' in order to document what God has done in their lives AND to learn how to open up conversation about Christ to those that aren't comfortable speaking about Christ.

- Couples Ministry at Capricorn Community Church - the team helped host a Date Night where married couples connected to the church could come for a 'night out' (babysitters provided in home). Many of the women of our church attend without their spouses -because of the stigma of church life or the husbands are not Believers in Christ. This event was a way to open the church doors for a relaxed gathering and allow the men specifically to get to know the pastor and the other church married church members.

These ministries helped Living Hope and the Capricorn Community Church see areas that need growth and deeper ministry. There's a lot of work to be done. We've opened 'cans' that have revealed much hurt and counselling needs and we're allowing the local teams to follow-up and evaluate this ministry and where it needs to go from here. This Women's Team was brilliant in allowing the 'field teams' test the waters of these new ideas and move forward as needed; it required LOTS OF FLEXIBILITY - before a new schedule could be put on paper, it was changed, changed again, and changed again. I think this 'flexibility' threw many of these women but they grew through it and were troopers! I truly believe God allows us to make plans that seem right and then He rocks them so that He can get more glory than we could ever imagine!

Not only did this team forge new ground with the fore-mentioned ministry, but they also:

- taught women how to dig deeper into their Bibles and prayer-life

- participated in Afternoon Kids Clubs in Capricorn and Overcome Heights

- organized 4 rooms/closets in our Capricorn facility

- built cabinets and shelves

- Youth Camp Fundraiser - Braai (BBQ) Borewors Rolls (sausages) and sold them on the street

- created a Mexican Fiesta for the LSEs before our Wait4Me Celebration

- participated in our annual Wait4Me (Sexual Abstinence Program) Celebration - setting up, taking photos, sharing testimonies, cleaning up!

- and most importantly ... they worshiped with our Capricorn Community Church family 2 Sundays - which was so valuable in relationship-building and showing the congregation just how much they're invested in the church!

Wait4Me audience: whole community was invited - specifically the school children we'd taught the Abstinence Program to in schools, local youth groups, our Afternoon Teen Club members, and any parent connected to those groups. We had around 250 people in attendance!

As David was building shelves, the security gate on the closet door shut and the automatic lock sealed him in. Oh how fun it was to see this manly, man behind bars in his own workshop! Meagan to the rescue with her keys!

Fruit from these efforts are already being seen. Many men who do not attend church with their wives have come to Sunday Worship or have stopped us on the street to say an intentional hello - normally just shrugging us off as if we're they're wives friends, not theirs.

Please continue to pray for follow-up in all these areas. We've got counselling to do, prayer needs to sit with, Youth Camp to plan, Women's Ministry to dig deeper into, and church-planting to continue ... and oh these are not light things. I've realized the power of prayer in my weakness and the importance of admitting my weakness daily. Pray with me!

Back to the real world

After 3 FULL weeks of Holiday Club (everyday, all day with the kids/teens), this week I caught up on my paperwork, tried to whittle my emails down, wrote/gathered curriculum for the next 6 months of Afternoon Clubs & made some head-way in the next phase of our Community Leader Development ministry! It was a lot of time at a desk, but it was a nice change.

Meagan & I also got to meet with all our Youth Cell Groups & talked with them about how to fundraise for our up-coming Youth Camp (9-11 Sept 2011)! We have to raise a LOT of money & we want our youth to be the ones behind that; so we all gathered, brainstormed, divided responsibilities & are underway in planning! This whole process was HUGE for us; the concept of working for things is foreign to our youth because so many organizations come & give handouts. The attitude of 'I deserve what you're giving' must stop. Selflessness has ceased because of the poverty of the mind. Our Camp planning is another great step in teaching our youth (and community) how to plan, budget, and work for what they need and want! This is a challenge & a PROCESS.

3 weeks (aka: 15 day or 120 hours ... 7200 exhausting, heart-renching minutes) of Holiday Club community ministry is over! I didn't think I'd physically, mentally, emotionally make it. It was HARD, out-of-comfort-zone work. Children & teens were unpredictable and challenging to minister to, but oh the rewards of knowing God was and is working in those lives to show His ultimate purpose - Salvation from a sinful world and reconciliation to a perfect God!

As I drove to work on this day, God showed me the most beautiful sunrise - over the mountains & ocean - declaring His greatness & how BIG He truly is. What a blessing to know the Creator of all the sunrises! A sweet, poignant reminder to press on!

First-ever Living Hope Career Day

What do you want to be when you grow up? ... this question is hardly talked about among those we work with. We daily see the inability to dream. Ever since we began Afternoon Teen Clubs, we've wanted to expand the career dreams of our teens - allow them to research, think wider than what they see in their communities and educate themselves as to how to attain the goal of their career dreams. Out of this desire, Living Hope Teens LSEs birthed the idea to have a Living Hope Career Day.

On 1 July 2011 we transported around 110 teens to our main campus where 25 Professionals set up booths and talked to our teens about their careers. Musicians, Soccer Coaches, Hotel Managers, Librarians, Nurses, Journalists, Chefs, Entrepreneurs, Firemen, Wedding Planners, Photographers, Security Guards ... just to name a few.

One of our LSEs pointed out a young boy to me - telling me he's one that stands at the traffic-lights begging for money after school and on the weekends. I was so encouraged that he attended our event and has the opportunity to dream bigger than 'begging' the rest of his life.

We've had great feedback from the Professionals involved and our teens! I think this was a great beginning to a deeper teen ministry!

Christmas in June

I miss American Christmas - particularly Christmas in the winter season. So, I declared 25 June in South Africa my American-Winter-Christmas. I made my friend Meagan play along & we had a ball!

. Played Christmas music all day
. Made breakfast in my PJs: bacon, scrambled eggs, bacon & buttermilk biscuits
. Watched a Christmas movie on my laptop
. Baked Sugar Cookies & decorated them with icing & sprinkles (mix & prepared icing from the States - always a welcomed gift)
. Made a big dinner: mustard chicken, deviled eggs, steamed broccoli, carrot soufflé, ambrosia (orange salad with coconut- Harold's recipe), Apple cider (Raven's Nest mix from Susan)
. Read the Christmas Story in Luke after dinner!
... I even wore a pair of Christmas PJs that my grandmother mailed me last Christmas (but they were too hot to wear during our summer-Christmas, but perfect for my June-Winter-South-African-Christmas).

It was neat celebrating a chilly Christmas again - and I especially loved sharing my American traditions with my friend Meagan!

University Ministries Leave an Imprint

The Shades Team has been gone about a 2 weeks. Life has been super busy and I'm very encouraged by the effects of this specific team. We're still talking about how fun they were, the encouragement they brought and how great it was to watch my life and my surroundings, my day-in-day-out, my challenges, my all through their eyes. They reminded me of why I was called here, they reminded me that it's ok to cry. They reminded me that God really is alive and active here. I know those things but it's nice to be reminded and confirmed/affirmed by others.

Thank you Shades University Ministries! Looking forward to hearing how God uses this experience to further the Kingdom of God both in South Africa and in Birmingham, Alabama!

Monday was the first day the Shades Mountain University Ministries Team was with us in Capricorn. I met with the Team this morning, briefed them on the week & sent them with some Living Hope friends for an official tour of Living Hope's ministry sites. I met back up with them that afternoon as we introduced the Team to the Life Skills Educators & allowed the Team to hear the hearts of those I work with, the people that are on the ground everyday ministering to the children & teens.

As Afternoon Club began, I was beaming with pride as I watched 2 of my former youth (Jenna and Allison) serve the people God called me to and minister to those they've personally prayed for out of my requests for ministry in South Africa. These girls were in my Core Group (small group) while I was on staff at Shades Mountain Baptist; I've known these sweet girls for 7 years, invested so much love into them and prayed they would multiply and disciple others after my time with them. With my own eyes I watched that prayer play-out. These girls are teaching and investing in others, the discipleship process is in action - I did all I could do, planted seeds, watered them and now others are watering that seed and the fruit is ministering to others. Wow! I'm honored, I'm excited, I'm proud of who these young ladies have become. I'm even more proud that they would sacrifice their time and money to invest in the culture and teens that God has burdened me for. They're seeing with their eyes all the things I've been telling them about and all the things and people they've prayed for. They're encouraging me and reminding me that progress has been made here and that the work is worth it! Seeing life here through their eyes is a blessing and seeing them minister to those I love is a deeper blessing!

Praise the Lord for teams that bring me strength!

John Thomas, founder of Living Hope, was gracious enough to clear his schedule to have dinner with the team last night!

He poured his heart out - telling heart renching stories about why Living Hope came about - giving the team an glimpse of how burdened he was about the AIDS crisis in Africa & the lives that were affected.

Here are some key points from his visit:
. 17,800 people were served by Living Hope last year. Many of these people are recurring clients and people we see weekly in either Support Groups, Afternoon Clubs, Home Based Care, etc.
. The greatest poverty is the poverty of the mind - the inability to dream.
. People often tell us, "You've shown me Jesus, now help me know Him." This is when we know we've served and met a need and then the work becomes even deeper !

John also reminded the Team that it's their job to communicate to others the vision of Living Hope and the work that God's doing in South Africa. We're still lacking funding in the Life Skills Department, so the Dollar-a-Day Program is still in great need and we need financial ministry partners. One of Living Hope's supporters has agreed to MATCH up to 300 'DADs' ... that is, if Living Hope can get up to 300 people to commit $1 US a day, the donor will match that money, making the donation $730 US dollars! Spread the word - your dollar is now multiplied when given to Living Hope! These programs are so crucial and so life-changing. Praying that you choose to invest in the spiritual lives of others in South Africa!

Youth Fridays

Each Friday night I'm in Capricorn with our Youth. As I've mentioned before, we no longer have a youth minister; therefore my friend Meagan and I have stepped in to fill the gap. The gap is being filled but the glue is getting looser. I'm overwhelmed with this task (on top of Living Hope work) and I'd love for our church to have a youth minister... FAST! Please pray with me as we seek God's hand in sending us a strong, male youth minister.

We're going through the book: The Seven Checkpoints. Here are some topics we've covered lately.

Authenticity: Is your faith real? We did a blind taste-test of high-quality junk food to cheap-off-brand foods that are comparable. Pictured above are the products: chocolate, chips, soda. Each contestant tasted the two versions of their product and each contestant could taste the difference in quality of the product. The challenge and message was, "Are you real or are you faking it?"

This lesson was also paired with a short intro on Spiritual Disciplines. If you really want to 'get real' you've got to put practice into it. You've got to walk the talk! We left them with some tool and also had them practice a 'Bible Study Method' in small groups. We're trying not to just equip but also guide them in practicing these tools!

Last week we talked about the importance of Sexual Purity. These teens get a lot of 'abstinence talks' in this area due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic; however, they're usually given statistics not Biblical reasons why you should remain pure ... and honestly, it's not about HIV, it's about obedience to the Lord, protecting your heart and emotions. I was hard on the girls this night. I'm tired of everyone beating up on the boys because they're visually driven. I'm ready for the girls to take responsibility for being the helpers God's created them to be - helping guys stay pure by the girls dressing appropriately, treating the guys with respect, building the guys up verbally and spiritually. In this culture especially, we see men mistreating women/girls all the time; we've got to rebuild the concept of 'family' and 'respect.' Gender-roles are all too skew here. Bottom line: Purity isn't about "how far is too far" - it's about "how pure can I be?" - body, soul and spirit!

The Life Skill Educators are currently doing some intense Biblical training on Friday mornings. We're doing an overview of the Bible - now focusing on a survey of the Old Testament AND a course I've been super impressed with called r12 (a whole study on Romans 12) http://r12online.livingontheedge.org/index.php . Here's what I love: our LSEs get to sit in small groups and share through guided questions. We're having deep, spiritual conversation not just work-related-task-talks!

One of the questions last week was, "How would you describe your spiritual growth over the last five years? When did you grow the most? When have you struggled?"

Two of the LSEs in my group said that they hit a spiritual growth-spurt when coming to work at Living Hope. They were clearly already Believers, but Living Hope and the ministry opportunities given to them have launched their faith and spiritual action to new heights! I was so proud to watch and listen these LSEs process the impact Living Hope has had on them personally. Living Hope is transforming their clients, communities, and staff!

"Why are they crying?"

My little 4 year old Capricorn friend, Mia, comes to church with me each week. A few Sundays ago during the 'response-time', lots of people came up to the front asking for prayer. Many were moved to tears - crying because they were desperate for God to do something in their life. Mia was on my hip, tightly holding on when she whispered in my ear, "Why are they crying?" I said, "They're speaking to God asking Him to help them." She thought about that for a second and said, "I want to cry."
Clever girl! In her sweet, innocent way, she understood 'speaking to God.' Little ones are sponges - especially when observing the Body-of-Christ in action! Beautiful! God is teaching me MUCH through the children of Capricorn, especially Mia!

Baby Dedication at CCC

Sweet babies were dedicated this past Sunday! It was nice to see moms holding their babies - its often that the moms throw the responsibility of raising their children upon the grandmother and we see grandmothers dedicating the child in church, but all of these babies had moms holding them, committing them to the Lord & asking the church to participate in the spiritual upbringing of their children! I was also filled with joy to have a father represented in this process here in Capricorn.

Beautiful progress! Brought tears to my eyes!

some prayer requests

On Fridays, all the Life Skills Educators come together for training. This is the one day we're all together and we try to take advantage of that and hear what's going on in the other branches. This particular Friday (6 May) a LOT came up during our debrief. I wanted to pass along these stories so that you can get an idea of what's going on in ministry in South Africa and also request your prayers for these communities.

Masi Community -
. There was a huge fire that burned down lots of homes in Masi just a couple weekends ago. Around 4500 people were displaced and without their (few) worldly possessions - no food, shelter or clothing. Four of our Living Hope staff were personally effected - homes ruined. Living Hope and the surrounding communities rallied around those effected and are busy rebuilding homes, supplying clothing and rebuilding physical lives. It's also been brought to our attention that as in any disaster, the people involved are crying out to God and questioning God's sovereignty and reasoning behind this disaster. Pray for the Believers in this community to bring light to those in grief.

Red Hill Community -
. Many in this community are Xhosa speaking Africans. This culture is NOT known for gang violence, but because of the influence of other cultures they are interacting with, a group of teens have begun a new gang. This small little community has been suddenly put on alert by this surprising turn of events. Life Skill Educators are trying to address the issue and divert attention from this new gang to positive things that are going on in the community. Pray for the enemy's attacks and the growth of teens in this community.
. Hygiene issues are continually a concern for Red Hill. There's no indoor plumbing and multiple families use the same outdoor pipe for water and also share toilets. One of our Life Skill Educators took this past week to teach about the simple act of washing hands before you eat. The children were so excited about this lesson, shared soap around the tap and were seen running up to other children on the street telling them to come wash their hands! Such a small and commonsensical concept in our eyes, but for a community without the convenience of running water - it's a foreign, luxurious idea. Hopefully we're instilling new hygiene ideas for a life-time!

Ocean View -
. Prayers needed to follow-up with children who have recently accepted Christ as their Savior at our Living Hope Camp.
. Specific prayers asked for an 8 year old who is now practically homeless. The dad left the family, the mom has a new boyfriend (whom she's living with) who doesn't want the child living with them - the mom has chosen the boyfriend over her own child and has put the child on the streets. Thankfully we think the grandfather is going to take the child in; however, we're concerned about this child's emotional state and also the physical needs of this 8 year old. Pray for this child - that she knows that she's loved by Christ and that He'll take care of her every need.

Capricorn and Overcome Heights-
. Recently found out that one of our regular Kids Club attendees in Capricorn (9 years old) has TB and is in the hospital for an extended stay. The family can't afford to travel and visit him, therefore he's all alone at the hospital.
. Also, one of our Kids Club members (10 years old with special needs) in Overcome was also hospitalized with TB. The initial reason he went to the doctor was for a persistent, nasty cough; therefore he was tested and concluded he had TB. After being treated in the hospital, it was discovered for that he has HIV as well. This child is now out of the hospital, but has lots of health and future issues to overcome. Pray for his family - that they would pay proper attention to this child and support him physically and emotionally.

First Youth Small Group

I'm happy to announce that Capricorn Community Church officially has Youth Small Groups! There are many more youth than there are leaders to lead, so we've divided the youth into 3 small groups & rotate a different group each week. Essentially each group will meet once a month. We'd like to meet with all the groups EVERY week but there aren't enough older ears to listen or heads to prepare. My learned-motto here is: baby steps! I also think that once-a-month meetings for these youth will help them make realistic steps in their walk with Christ. Putting too many expectations and required meetings on these teens have proven to cause them to flee because tasks seem unrealistic or too much of a change. Making changes one small step at a time!

It was nice to be back in small-group action! I miss 'Core Groups' (as we called them at Shades Mountain where I came from). I miss listening to individual needs, speaking truth into individual lives, being deeply involved in the lives of youth. 'Crowd Ministry' was very effective in Christ's ministry on earth, but we see over and over in scripture that discipleship was a great focus of His and Matthew 28:18-20 is Jesus' command to us to also go & make disciples. Such a hard, yet important task.

Pray that Youth Small Groups will help deepen the walks-of-faith of our teens. Pray also that God brings the right people to help us lead & grow these discipleship groups! We're celebrating the initial ignition of these groups but know God has bigger plans ahead!

First you see children running up & down the streets, next a teen riding a beat-up skate board, then a random cow! You really never know what you're gonna get in this place. Always an adventure.

LSE Leadership Training

One of my focuses this year has been Community Leadership Development within the communities we work with through Living Hope. We're hoping to link the work of Living Hope with building up the local church to be equipped for Discipleship and Teen Ministry needs in our communities. As with many things in a large successful organization, there are hundreds of busy-bees doing successful work but the group is often unaware of what each other is doing. This has been the case within the Life Skills department that I work. The Life Skills Educators (LSEs) do a variety of things (schools, preschools, parenting courses, teen ministry), and with an added focus of this Community Leadership Development, the LSEs were unaware of exactly what goes into our efforts. So, this past Thursday and Friday, Meagan and I were given an opportunity to lead the LSEs in the exact training we do in the local churches with youth pastors and rising youth leaders. It was so neat watching the faces of our peers as they learned and were challenged in the importance of Discipleship and Leadership.

I'm really loving teaching and working in the communities here. I think God is going to do big things through this new focus and in building up churches and its leaders!

Alabama storms make South Africa news

Wanted you to know that South Africa is aware & thinking about my Southern US friends & family. Newspapers are covering the recent storms & relief efforts going on in Alabama particularly. May God comfort all those who are picking up their material lives, grieving and beginning afresh. May the Body of Christ come together & minister abundantly - being the hands & feet of Christ to those who are in need.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted!

It's beginning to look a lot like winter - Ice Skating

During the long Easter break, some friends and I went to an Ice Skating Rink in Cape Town. The weather has been getting chilly and we were so excited about bundling up and going out on the town! The rink was very similar to our US skating rinks. Because we went on a holiday-week, it was crowded, but we managed to have fun and have lots of laughs!

After skating, we went to a favorite take-out place: Golden Dish. I've only been there a few times, but it's a treat when I get to go. I had a Mutton Salome - it's a spicy, filling dish!

I've really enjoyed this break and fun times with my friends!
