Humor:
One recent weekend, my friend Meagan was over at my house. We’d just gotten in the door from an outing when I heard a strange noise coming from my upstairs bedroom. I grabbed Meagan’s arm and told her to listen. We listened hard as the noise seemed to briskly walk from one end of the bedroom to the other. It was a scratching noise, a consistent sharp sound against the hardwood floors. We carefully followed the sound up the stairs (broom in hand) and then heard a loud thud. We rounded the corner to find a large South African bird frantically trying to get out a closed window- literally pounding his head against the clear glass. Due to the absence of heat/air-conditioning, I’d left a small window open for circulation. The open-window is close to the roof-ledge and I’m sure the bird hopped into the window from the roof. Once inside, he couldn’t find his way out.
I ran back downstairs to get a mop bucket and left Meagan upstairs. When I came back to the situation, Meagan said, “What do you think you’re going to do with that?” We both laughed as I shrugged my shoulders. “I guess I was thinking I’d trap it?” I said. Stupid, I know. But brave, little Meagan had the best plan. Meagan dodged the bird’s flapping and panting, opened up the other window he kept running into and let him fly out! We looked around the room after that whole episode and saw evidence of his stress… feathers loose, flying around in the room.
That initial fear of the foreign sound walking around my bedroom floor was painful, but the situational humor of a bird in the house has made me laugh numerous times since.
