Our youth are at it again … fundraising for CAMP (which is in Dec 2012). Yes, it’s a while away, but with our community being so financially poor, we’re trying to help our youth plan ahead and think forward; a feat in itself. Our Youth Committee (made up of older youth that were nominated and appointed by our entire youth group) got together, we gave them a 2012 calendar and let them plan and set goals. Our camp is about R450 per person (about $65 US).
Our first attempt at raising funds happened last month. We put on a Bake Sale. Our youth ask the congregation and some moms in the community to bake and contribute. It was truly a picture of all people and things coming together – one would donate flour, the other vegetable oil and another a stick of butter. The designated bakers would gather the ingredients and get to work for our big day. We’d advertised this fundraiser amongst our congregation predominantly and asked them to save up a few Rand in order to support our youth.
The day of, people were bringing goodies and stacking them inside the church before worship began. The smell of freshly baked goods were wafting around as we worshiped! After the service, we set up our table of goodies outside, and the swarming began. People were pushing and reaching and going after those baked goods like they were going to fly away. Our youth ran the whole event! I was so proud! We made R860 that day. A good start to our camp fundraising and wonderful lessons of forward thinking, planning and earning!
