March 2013 recap : life and ministry of Melanie

UPDATE FROM SOUTH AFRICA

This month brought amazing highlights and adventures thanks to a short-term team from the USA. Here are a few notes about what went on this month and how you can lift up this mission …

HIGHLIGHTS
. Fruitful trip to the USA (returned to South Africa early March).  I was able to attend a missions conference at my sending church in Alabama. I felt such love and support from those that are supporting this church-planting mission; I was reminded of how big the Body of Christ is and how important my job is. I felt renewed in my call and excited to return to continue pouring into the lives of those in Capricorn.

. The Student Ministry of Shades Mountain Baptist in Birmingham, Alabama visited our community for about a week in mid-March. They helped us with some goals our pastor has for our congregation this year: building unity among members, reaching our community, discipling young people and strengthening families. We added to the seeds of these goals through a variety of ministries. Check out this month's blog post about this amazing short-term team!

. With the initiative of a local mom who has a heart for pre-teens, we began a separate Sunday School class for ages 11-13. They've cleverly named themselves, "Junior Youth" and have been excited to learn. We're seeing more of this age-group come to salvation in Christ; therefore, our church is trying to grow and challenge these new Believers! I'm helping lead this group. We're working through Ken Flower's Basic Training curriculum currently and the Junior Youth are memorizing the books of the Bible! Pray for them as we take their Biblical knowledge to a new level.

. Easter was great. Our church held Good Friday and Easter Sunday services. Meagan and I had a feast of traditional family favorites from both my family and Meagan's. We ate ham, carrot soufflé, vegetables, deviled eggs and gherkins (cocktail pickles).

. I almost forgot some of sweet news … our household added a new member this month: a dachshund puppy named Gherkin (meaning a small pickle)! She's added a ton of joy to my life and a fun distraction when life gets hard here. Just humor me when I post sweet puppy pics on the blog please!

PRAYER REQUESTS

. Follow-up that needs to be done with our congregation and community members after the ministry done during our short-term team's visit.

. Junior Youth Sunday School - for this young group to grow and have a passion for the Word of God. For a new, young generation of Believers to spread God's love in Capricorn!

. For our church-plant to grow not only in number but in depth.

. For my friend, Meagan, as she continues full-time Seminary. She's been faithfully studying and enjoying her classes. Pray that God would grow her as a ministry leader and Gospel-spreader!

. For me - as I've applied to study a few courses in ministry and missions theory here in Cape Town. Pray that God would guide me as to what to study and how much to take on.
