When speaking about ministry in South Africa, I get lots of recurring questions. So, this is a continuation of my blog series "frequently asked questions" ...
Today's question: "What's the weather like?"
South Africa is on the Southern Hemisphere; therefore, whatever season America is experiencing, we're experiencing the opposite. Right now, it's late October, so we're in Spring. It's cool at night (40s F) but the days are pretty hot (80s F).
Summer months are usually Nov-Feb. It can get in the upper 90s F, sometimes 100s F, but rarely that hot. I live a few blocks from the ocean, so I get a breeze most days. Cape Town is known for their wind! Summer days are miserable for me; I hate the heat. But, the landscape of Cape Town lends itself to lots of fun, outdoor activities in the summer. Cape Town shows off in these hot months! It's beautiful if you can keep cool.
Winter months are usually June-Aug. It doesn't snow in Cape Town, so it never reaches 32 F, but it can get pretty close. Winter is our rainy season. So, cold winds and lots of damp rain keep our days chilly and nights very snuggly.
What you have to remember is, we don't have heat and air conditioning in our homes. While we might not get as hot and cold in drastic seasons, it's hard to get relief from our extreme temperatures even when you're inside your house. I use a wood stove in the house in winter and a metal fan in the summer.
