unrealistic expectations?

I had a conversation with a young friend the other day that continues to make me think. This friend continues to have struggles with her parents; she's constantly reminded that she falls short of perfection and that nothing she does is good enough for 'their family.' After many conversations about this topic and a continual frustration in that relationship with her parents, I started to think about the correlation between her apathy toward 'correction' and her relationship with Christ.
I asked, "do you give up trying to please your parents because you know it can't be done?" She answered, "yes." I then asked, "So, when you know you're not living up to your spiritual potential, do you give up because you know you can't be perfect?"
We had a great dialog about this and it continues to ring in my head. Do we often shrug off God's correction and disappointment in us because we're expected to fail and sin? Do we continue to sin (as Paul says), so that grace may increase? What cheap, unrealistic, fake grace.
I keep asking myself:
. what discipline do I lack and not pay attention to because I think it's unattainable?
. what relationships in my life echo how I relate to Christ?
. do I expect grace or am I appreciative of Jesus' sacrifice?
